  • Advert surprise

I normally use advert blocking software when reading this forum but today I tested another browser.

I was surprised to find the first advert that came up was offering me the ability to "Browse 10000 Single Asian Women's Profiles - Live".

Are such adverts really suitable for a gardening forum?

Does the GYO mag also carry adverts for such activity?

It has put the gentile activity of gardening into a completely different light... and not one I really want to stay in!

The forum does not pick what adds it shows its the cookies on your pc that do that. It does not mean you have visited the site purely that your browsing habits suggest to web crawlers (robots) it may be of interest

Ah, so using a new browser without any cookies stored the GYO Mag's advert system doesn't know my preferences but assumes that I'm partial to meet single Asian women? That would make sense. Not nice though.

I would have thougt that without any information as to a reader's tastes the Mag would set the default to something less distasteful!!!

We've had similar discussions about adverts before - http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...ine_68330.html

Thanks VC, shame the mag hasn't improved things in the intervening two years!

I've used the browser a little now to access some other sites and GYO seems to now know I don't go to dodgy sites and has stopped giving me dodgy adverts.

Shame they can't set their defaults for something less salacious!

Advertising pops up on almost every site I visit, and sometimes it is of the nature you describe and sometimes it isn't. Usually, a single glimpse at a few consumer goods on sites like Amazon results in persistent ads for the same and similar for the next few months! Are you sure nobody with access to your computer hasn't simply clicked on an internet dating site? This can be done in error as sometimes there are adverts which appear to be for something else but lead to these. But a magazine really cannot control which ads show and which don't on an internet site using cookies.

The ad engines jump to conclusions.

One time I was doing research into the excellent Canterbury prog rock band "Caravan". I was beseiged by advertisements for mobile-home related merchandise for months!

I had a similar experience to Martin H a while back, I was searching for a material called "kinky fibre" which is used in tying flies (lures) for sea fishing. I got some weird and disturbing ads pop up for months afterwards.

I find I get adverts for Thai, Russian, Malaysian and Ukrainian women, and a few to "increase" myself.
Is the idea to go for the last one first then have an advantage in the selection of the former?

Meteor, try fluoro fibre, although I find goat hair good, just need a green goat next.
                    Anyone have a green goat?

Maybe, on a brand new computer, and in the absence of any browsing history to lean on for targeted advertising, the advertisement provider chooses based on whatever adverts get the most click-throughs on that particular web site?

I use both the iPad and our main computer....the number of times I've accidentally touched the screen to scroll down and accidentally touched an advert!!!

No wonder mine keep coming back for more!

A few years ago a rather staid friend of mine, some 75 years old got his first computer.

he was rather amozed at the hits he got when he googled Sus sex by mistake.

I cleared my history and cookies earlier. My hubby and I follow ice hockey. I've just checked out the hockey website and came back on here and noticed the Asian babes are back! Ads are obviously, as previously said, related to your browsing history. i.e. Hockey assumes male, although I would say the fan base was 50/50.
