  • Tips on growing tatties in a bath

I sort of found an old plastic bath in a skip and decided to give it a good home.
I Intend to drill in some holes for drainage, then fill with leaves and spent hops and do nowt till spring.
Then, plant seed tatties in the leaf mould/hops and cover with a mixture well rotted hos muck and cheapo MPC as required.
Has anyone of you grapes done this and if so what results did you get?
    Any tips or advice welcome.

I think I would prefer several individual containers, so I could harvest them on-demand in smaller quantities - once you start harvesting your bath aren't you going to have to lift them all / they will get disturbed as you start to harvest some?

Either way, container grown spuds provide lovely clean tubers but need a lot of watering

Baths make great growing containers for Carrots & Parsnips.

I do something similar with 50 gallon plastic water tanks, used for main crop they are great.

Watering can be an issue but if you have good drainage its not a problem, I leave a 2" gap above the compost and drop a full 2 gallon bucket in all at once, this ensures the water flows over the surface and gets to all parts.

I grow in compost and have to feed after the first 6 weeks, high nitrogen at first, then change to high potash for the last half of the growing period.

I use Vitax Organic Potato Fertiliser in my containers of spuds. I'm not organic (although I don't use any pesticides as such) but JBA had it on offer when I bought my seed potatoes a couple of years back so I went with that!

I think it's a good idea and watering should be a doddle - just turn the taps on!
            Hahahaha...sorry.

I use a similar potato fertiliser, it was on offer in August in ASDA, down from £6 to 2. Got to the checkout and it went through for a pound! Wish I'd bought several now. Does seem to increase the crop though I grew a different variety so can't be sure.

My tip is:- get out of the bath before you put the tatties in.................

and, a loofah is good for scrubbing the skins off tatties, as well as your feet...........

Forgot in my original post I only use the 2 gallon bucket when the tubers are swelling, not before or you could drown the plant.
