I want to go on holiday, I'm thinking Greece, Shirley Valentine is my favourite film. I'll be travelling alone, can anyone recommend somewhere nice and reasonably priced? I was looking at Mykonos but I've heard it's expensive.

Not been to the Greek islands for a long time but why not Island hop. You can go where you please and find accommodation when you get there. The hotel/accommodation people used to meet the ferries looking for trade. You can get to some really interesting places a bit off the main tourist route.

    Have fun!!

I like Skopelos (fly to Skiathos, then ferry) and Symi and Tilos (fly to Rhodes).

Hi Bex, if cash is no object, I would highly recommend doing the Greek Cruise through Th0ms0ns. I have done it 3 times & it's great. Failing that, Halkidiki is a nice place.

If you like walking and exploring and want a bit of company, try Greece & Mediterranean Islands walking | Ramblers Worldwide Holidays or one of the other walking companies. I've done those several times

I used to own a house in the Greek part of Cyprus. In coral bay. The nicest part of Greece I've been to was on Samos. But it is difficult to reach off season and in season you need to talk to a travel agent, I don't know why they make it so difficult to make our own arrangements.

Money is definately an object lol I'm on a non-existant budget at the moment. I think I fancy going here:

Paleokastritsa, Corfu, a full guide to Paleokastritsa

I don't think I'm brave enough to go island hopping as much as I'd like to.

I went to Halkidiki a few years ago and we couldn't go in the sea due to the thousands of Jelly fish, it was a nice place though.

                  Hi Bex,

My better half and I have been to the above place twice (although the last time was about 8 years ago)

                  Beautiful, authentic and extremely friendly.
It is quite hilly, so if you like long walks - then be prepared to go 'up and down' a lot.

The beaches are also a bit stoney - but there are the odd sandy one which takes a bit of finding.

A trip to (or walk if you don't mind the ascent) to Lakones is a must - it's like going back in time !!! - real Greek, fantastic food and wonderful people. We seriously wanted to buy a home in the place.

As I said earlier, it's been a while since we've been there - so I don't know how the financial crash has hit the place.

As a youth - I originally left Scotland with a one-way ticket to Greece (by bus !!!) - I've been all over and love the place.

However, since the days of Shirley Valentine and the introduction of the Euro - it's no longer as cheap as it once was, but there are a few hidden gems if you explore enough.

I can heartily recommend Paleokastritsa. I've been a few times and love it.

I can recommend Paxos, or even more typically old-style Greek - anti paxos. Just perfect and a short flight.

Fly to Corfu and then get ferry across to either of the islands, which will be escorted if you get a package, so no need to worry about them.

Check out Olympic holidays - you can get some great deals from them, especially early and late in the year.

An Island to avoid, after I went there on my own in 2004 - is Crete. It feels quite Eastern and as a woman on my own, I felt very threatened walking through the town. I've not felt like that anywhere else in Greece tbh.

I lived on Zante for a few years and parts of it are very beautiful, but without local knowledge it's difficult to avoid the worst excesses of places like Laganas. OMG

I'm the woman down the road who talks to the microwave lol

I went to Crete a few years and I must admit, compared to other Islands I wasn't too impressed. The first holiday I went to after my DH passed away was to Laganas and I must admit we had a great time, the kids were 10 and 4 and considering I was single woman on own with kids I thought it was a brave choice.
