    • Happy Sunday from Puppyland
They're asleep at the moment so no photos for a while.
Yesterday, they were crying pitifully and Bessie was ignoring them so I gave them their first solid food after a diet of Bessie-Milk. Some mashed up puppyfood, mixed with warm water. Black Pudding started scoffing immediately, Little Baby stood on the plate while the other pups licked around her paws. The slowest one to get the idea was the B&T pup.
Second dish of food and they fell on it, literally, although B&T was still not very impressed.
Bess is becoming more distant from them, though still feeding and washing them. She's also less protective and lets Mary mooch around without snapping at her. Fortunately Mary isn't at all interested in the puppies. Think its a "been there, done it, got the Tshirt" mentality.

      • Petal's eating technique involves launching herself at the food bowl and standing over it, guarding it and scoffing as quickly as possible! Clearly learned when she was little!

        How about these little fellas.

My biggest dog (Rhodesian ridgeback) was born into a home that also had a black lab.....who disliked puppies

This turned out to be a real blessing however, as 'Inca the puppy hating lab' taught the whole litter of nine rambunctious pups strong boundaries and impeccable doggy manners. It's not an easy job for a human or a tired/inexperienced mother dog.
There's a lot to be said for a disinterested auntie.....with big teeth and low tolerance

Here's a good idea presented by Stanley Coren: how to raise a litter so that there's no need for the pups to learn to guard food.

                          • Hello from Puppyland - sorry its late
                            No photos yet.
They're having fun in their newly extended run. Instead of being trapped in their crate until I lift them out, they can now leave it whenever they wish and go walkabout in a corner of the kitchen. You'd think they were in a different country the way they come out iand look around. Then they toddle over to the far side and look totally bemused, as if they need satnav to find their way back
