      • Acksurely, I've been thinking of the Famous 5. The Famous Five (series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Black Pudding = Julian, tall, strong and intelligent

Brown Bear is ahem "Dick" cheeky sense of humour

Baby = George (Georgina), the tomboy. Headstrong and courageous by nature and has a hot and fiery temper.

Big Girl = Anne, does not really enjoy the adventures as much as the others

Spud = Timmy the dog, very friendly – clever, affectionate and loyal.

The characters seem to match the pups but I cannot imagine going into the garden and calling out any of those names aloud

        • Surely it will only confirm what you neighbours already think?

              • FF - as I've said I am built for comfort not speed and am medically too short for my weight. Complex be damned - if people are fat phobic it's their problem not mine. As for T.T she could represent a sleek, fast motorcycle that goes nuts every now and again on the Isle of Man.
Other than that how about Nellie?

                • Yes, how about Nellie?

FWIW, I like the puddings and would get confused if they were called differently all of a sudden. And whatever names you think of now... in their new families, they're going to get new ones again anyway!
...bonkers about beans... and now a proud Nutter!

                  • For anyone here who is interested in puppy development and socialisation I thought I'd share these two screenshots from a presentation given by Kathryn Lord at the SPARCS 2013 conference, "Making Sense of Social Behaviors". You can see how the different senses start to develop in dog pups at an early age. This is when their rapidly developing brains need stimulation of these senses so that the pups can grow into well adjusted adults.

                    http://www.berrywood.de/pupsSensoryDevelopment.jpg

At first the parts of the brain that are able to assess danger and create a feeling of fear are not yet fully developed, and so the puppies that follow their dam around can explore the world outside their nest without any inhibition. That is the best age to make them familiar with all sorts of things that will be a part of their later lives.

Then at some point their first fear responses set in. By that age, the most valuable time window for those first impressions starts to close.

                    http://www.berrywood.de/pupsFear8weeks.jpg

Here is quite a nice list with ideas on what to introduce the puppies to during that critical first socialisation period. VC can already tick off several items, like slippery flooring and scent and voice of female adult humans

                    PS
If you would like to watch Kathryn Lord's fascinating presentation comparing the development of dog and wolf pups and a lot more of first-hand research by other eminent scientists in the field of dog behaviour and biology, do visit the SPARCS website at caninescience.info - silver membership is very affordable and gives you an incredible value and wealth of information as you get to watch all the videos of all the speakers of past conferences.

Before naming a dog, you should always go very early (when no-one is about) to the park or fields or lanes where you will be mostly walking your new pet, and shout out the chosen name as loud as you can several times. If your face turns red and you feel a right wally, maybe you need to reconsider your choice of names....

Also, if you use "people" names, at least one person in the park at the same time as you will have the same name as your dog and wonder why a complete stranger is yelling his name...

                      Endless wonder.

                      • Puppies 3 January 31 days old

Starring Spud, Baby, Bessie and a glimpse of Auntie Mary
The other 3 pups were asleep so Spud and Baby came out to play and explore the kitchen and have adventures.

Come on Spud, said Baby (showing her curly tail) let's see what we can find

They set off to the far end of the kitchen, where Spud surprised Aunty Mary, who was fast asleep in her bed, by sniffing her nose

Mummy, Mummy, there's a big dog who looks just like Spud, and she opened her eyes and looked at Spud as if she was having a nightmare...........

It was all a bit too exciting for Spud, who fell asleep across his Mummy's paws

and dreamt of what he would do when he was a big boy

                        THE END

                            • They're all growing curly/wavy, long coats and their tails are curling up and back over their backs, like Bessie's does. They all have spaniel ears too and Black Pudding has more brown highlights - so he's a tricolour like Spud.
I know I'm biased but I think they're going to be good looking dogs when they grow up
