  • She is a happy dog, full of life and bounce - and she makes me laugh.
Playing Fetch last night in the kitchen, with a toy mouse. She'd shake it so hard to kill it that she'd fall over with the effort. Within seconds she'd pulled the poor mouse's braces off (on his trousers, not his teeth)...............I did wonder whether she'd treat puppies so roughly
Crazy dog - she fits in well here

      • Surely the vet could have been more sure -if that's proper English - than he/she was? Is it so difficult for them to tell if a dog is having pups? Whatever happens, Bessie has a great home and has brightened up our days too!

She may still be having pups - I just don't know for sure either way

              • I seem to remember Di's Winnie - who looks a lot like Bessie - went through a phantom after Di adopted her. Just saying.
Whooops - now what are the dogs getting up to?

                  • I was thinking (please give me a round of applause as it does'nt happen often) that VC said Bessie had been kept in with the puppies at the rescue place for a couple of weeks before she moved into VC's doggy hotel. If her mothering instinct had been perked by being with the pups and then she left them whats the possibility of her trying the create her own by having a phantom pregnancy?

Mine - that feel some movements but thinks it could be just normal intestinal action.
Another one that says it feels like a 5 a side football team in there.
Could it be the raw sprouts bouncing around?

Lumpy, that's a brilliant thought! Honestly! However - I would expect her to have milk in that case. Mine always have a little bit of milk during false pregnancies (which are normal in dogs!), but they never had milk when a litter was due until the first pup was born.

It can be difficult to be sure for a vet if there are only one or two pups. It can be difficult to hear their heart beats, and you also won't feel much of their movements because they have so much room. An ultrasound won't necessarily give reliable information, if you see pups it's good, but if not you can still get one. With an x-ray you almost can't miss the puppy skeletons, and an x-ray would definitely be necessary if she's in labour and not getting on within reasonable time. If it's only one pup (for example because the mating took place very late during her standing heat) it will be very big, and most vets will agree that it's an indication for a Caesarean.

The most critical stage for any sort of treatment is the first third of any pregnancy, when most of the development of tissue takes place. With each and every treatment, pregnancy or not, you have to assess the risk versus the benefit. As long as Bessie is happy, I wouldn't bother, but if I was worried I'd always prefer knowing the facts over, possibly, making a wrong guess.
...bonkers about beans... and now a proud Nutter!
