Without wanting to raise a contentious issue, What do you think? I think it's a shame the pensioner didn't whip him.

Interesting, not sure what I think, if it had happened here there would have been a public outcry I'm sure, it's this thing about taking the law into your own hands. Part of me says 'yeah, he deserves it' but really don't know, I'll think about it.

I think this was wrong (as much as it made me chuckle) but I do think people should suffer for their crimes. I also believe that death sentences should exist for extreme cases where it is beyond doubt. I feel there is no respect for the law and if there were more harsh penalties and brought to public attention it would help. There is also a lot to be said for stocks - being able to throw rotten fruit at someone who is likely to know you as you live locally.

Oh well that's me mini rant done.

On the face of it, it might seem very satisfying seeing instant "Justice" metered out by the public.
However the man may have been innocent. That is why we have courts and proper investigations.
Do we really want to end up with linchings in the street?

A justice systems priority is to implimenting adequate punishments to those who commit crimes to the detriment of the general, law abiding public. Unfortunately, punishment does not always fit the perceived seriousness of the crime. As such people will always react in a situation where they know that the state will probably iet them down.
And do I agree with the above....yes because numerous witnesses saw the attack.

There's something puzzling me about this.
The cling film I buy won't even cling to a plate let alone a bloke on a lamppost - not that I've tried
So where can I buy that cling film please?

                      I agree with Bill.

In this case, it sounds as if the rough justice that was meted out was pretty fair! But on the whole I wouldn't sanction mob action because if perceived justice is doled out by people in a heated frame of mind, some awful things can happen.

Our justice system in the UK isn't perfect by any means but it is one of the most respected in the world, with the notion that 'twelve good (wo)men and true' will come to a balanced view about someone's guilt.

Has anyone here ever served on a jury, btw?

It's not 'right' but probably a lot more effective, at stopping re-offending, than giving him a light sentence, or a warning

I've been called twice. The first time I was dismissed before I was called to a case because my father had died. The second time was a 9 day fraud trial. Its a bit worrying when half the jury don't understand accounts (not that I did, but I could see the weaknesses). Would be even more worrying on a big trial where lives had been harmed.

The guy will think twice before robbing someone in the future. Job done as far as I am concerned. He deserved what he got.

Well I was going to say that there are people who pay hundreds of pounds to be made naked, wrapped in cling film and whipped.
