I have decided to update this thread. I have had (so far) the best Christmas Day since Brian died. My dogs somehow knew that today was different and were like children. So excited. I did my trips round the family ending up with my eldest son and his girlfriend who were stand in managers for the pub for the day. I haven't had Xmas dinner (yet). I've had a laugh, I've really enjoyed myself and I haven't had the stress of somebody else's Christmas on sufferance because they feel they have to be nice to a widow. I might or might not cook turkey today, but I suspect it will be tomorrow.

I told my kids that I would go out and socialise tonight. I haven't. Nor have I eaten anything. But I've had a fantastic day. I've done what I wanted to do, I'm not doing someone elses Christmas with their timescales and traditions. I'm now at home with my dogs. My dinner has thawed out on the kitchen floor so I think (I know)I will be having Xmas dinner tomorrow.

If you can make yourself happy it will spread to those around you - your dogs! They are brilliant mood sensors and are probably hoping that if you are contented today it will mean extra turkey for them when its cooked.
Our Christmas menu was - trifle for breakfast (oh I am a slob), marmite sarnies for lunch and beans on toast for tea. The dogs got an extra large packet of ham between them.I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

Glad you've had a good day, Janie. Dogs can be the best company.
We had dinner at my BiL's, but the dogs were confined to the car for most of the day, as their house was crowded, and they have a toddler. Once home again, I spent most of the evening slobbing in front of the telly, on the sofa, under a warm furry Golding Retriever.

It's now about quarter past three on Boxing Day. My Christmas dinner is on and it smells wonderful. It won't be ready for another 2 hours. I've pre prepared everything so I only need to go into the kitchen and switch things on as needed. I'm still trying to decide whether to have broccoli or not. Or whether to have a starter and can I fit a pud in later. The dogs are waiting in anticipation. They will get a bit of everything except potatoes as one of them has an intolerance to them. My nasty neighbour has packed his car and gone, hopefully for several days."I prefer rogues to imbeciles as they sometimes take a rest" (Alexander Dumas)
