Thanks for the reply. Due to the burner having a high canopy, there is no room on top to put a fan so here is the cardboard template idea I was thinking about ~~( I have yet to cut the tin plate). The top tab will be secured to the flue via a half inch wide collar, it will then be shaped forward from the flue, down the canopy & have a small shelf to rest the fan. The Tin plate will be touching the canopy at all points except the shelf.

I adopted a very clever system using a gas boiler which ran on a program timer and heated water which circulated to every room of the house if required, it has a thermostat and invloves no work. Nor does the chimney set fire every year. It is called GAS CENTRAL HEATING.

We already had a wet system here ... we replaced the boiler with a log burner and reduced our fuel cost by 80% - we buy the logs in, not enough spare wood here but of course if the wood/fuel was free that would be even better!

Rather than the wood fire being in the main living room, with dust from ash etc., ours is in the boiler room. That gets a lot more dusty than it used to, but its contained and we don't see it as a problem. The room gets toasty hot and right now is full of bits of Canna and Hedychium (ornamental ginger) roots that I split up that are growing nicely. Oh ... and my Onion, Pepper and Aubergine seeds ... and will soon have the growing light in their for them, they'll be monsters given the ambient temperature in there!

Personally I think the GAS CENTRAL HEATING you invented is over rated!!!

Just a thought Mally, if you made your sheet out of copper you might speed up the heat transfer rate.

Cheers Bill, I only have tin plate at the mo so will do a bit of research...........Just done some research.......................it is actually an Aluminium tray from some greenhouse staging so still unsure if it's as good as Copper.

copper absorbs heat quicker but aluminium gets rid of it quicker so is better for a heatsink

In my pc the heat sink clamps to the cpu and they add a thin film of heat tranfering paste between them, maybe that would help too. its all getting a bit nit picky but sometimes a mass of tiny insignificant impovements make for success.

It looks like tin plate BM and if these things have any weight about them you may be asking a lot of the rear bend to support that weight.

Do these things need a rising hot air current to make them spin and if so will not the base disturb that air current.

Cheers Potty, it's aluminium sheet which is attached to the flue with a collar. I was hoping the plate would get hot enough to turn the fan but it's all guess work at the mo. I'm hoping to borrow a fan to try it first.

Pity the sides weren't long enough to bend round the back of the drop down piece.
