i am thinking of getting one to circulate the heat from the wood burner better. Just wondered if anyone had used one.

I've seen one of these in action, it does make a difference.

I have one of these Caframo Ecofan 810 UltrAir Stove Fan - Nickel Blade: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home
Its good and does redirect some of the rising heat into the room. How much difference you'd notice, I don't know. Probably depends on the location of your fire, whether its in a fireplace or freestanding as mine is.
I bought it for its looks as much as for what it could do. Mine has brass blades and I love to watch it starting up and spinning away. They're much cheaper now than when I bought mine.
If you have the money, buy one, its a real talking piece with visitors who can never understand how it works

That's the same as my sister's VC. She said that hers was brilliant when she saw it in the shop but it didn't work as well in her house but she does have a huge lounge. It is a lovely piece of "furniture" though and it really fans if you know what I mean.
I think it probably works but just not as well as you might hope.A garden is a lovesome thing, God wot! (Thomas Edward Brown)

I have a large lounge too and tend to sit at the far end of it, by the window away from the fire. The closer you are to the stove, the greater the effect, obviously!!
It doesn't work miracles though.
I'm glad I bought mine, as I like the look of it, and I'm tempted to buy another cheaper one for the other stove.
Wonder whether a ceiling mounted fan, would blow the heat back down to your feet?

Fans today are made with a little switch that changes blade rotation. Counterclockwise produces that pleasant summer breeze we crave. Clockwise makes an updraft that sends the warmer air pooled near the ceiling back into the living space — cutting heating costs by as much as 10%.

Thanks for all the comments. I think that I have made up my mind and am going for a Smart Fan. I have a height restriction top of the stove to the tiles above is only 23cm and the Smart Fan is 19cm. More expensive than I had expected so just lets hope it works.

Don't forget a powered fan can have an adverse effect on the appliance flue. We often have to give the home owner a choice, disconnect the fan of disconnect the gas fire, don't mind which but it is going to be one or the other,Potty by name Potty by nature.

Well the Smart Fan has arrived!!!! It is now on top of the wood burner and spinning merrily. It has turned very mild again but the first effect is that the other room and the kitchen are warmer and we probably won't have to light the other fire tonight. As you go up the stairs which go up from the room with the large wood burner there is not such a noticeable change in temperature when you get level with the ceiling, and we only have the wood burner ticking over.
I will report again when it turns cold.

In laws have one very much like the one BM put a link to, they think its great as they changed from a rayburn to a wood burning stove which wasn't kicking out the same level of heat but, the fan made a massive difference. They've had theirs about 2 years now.I'm only here cos I got on the wrong bus.
