                  • Seeing, for the first time since we took on this plot aka derelict ground at the end of April, an honest-to-goodness, proper, real, actual FINE TILTH. *Faints*

                      • Happy that the local town council has 'engaged gear' and evicted 3 long-absent plot-holders. The plots will be divided so we could have up to 6 new allotmenteers to chew the cud with.

The council have also kindly said I can help myself to whatever's in the shed that was on one of the plots - an initial rummage has revealed a decent looking petrol engined rotovator.

edit: have now properly looked at the rotovator (previously covered up) - it looks fairly new and the same model sells for £400 new so will briefly use it for my purpose then ask the council if the former plot-holder wants it back. re: splitting of plots - ours are full-size (250-300 sq. m) so they are still a good size once divided. The abandoned plots typically have 5-10 metres of jungle at one end.

                        • I'd be very careful about taking a valuable item like a rotavator. Accusations of theft could follow despite Council saying you can help yourself. It is not theirs to dispose of and they should be making every effort to ensure the proper owner has every opportunity to remove his property.

I'll also take the opportunity to voice my disapproval of sub-dividing plots. Everyone should have the opportunity to be self sufficient in vegetables and this is not possible on half sized or smaller plots no matter how this may massage a Council's waiting list figures.

Now these comments may not be wholly appropriate on this thread but they arose from a post on the thread.
