Message in a Bottle Scheme

OK, I may be slow, but I've only just been made aware of this through our local Neighbourhood Watch Scheme leaflet which has just arrived.

I've also heard of a similar suggestion for people putting important medical info and contact numbers on a piece of paper, and tucking it in your 'now redundant' car tax-disc holder, for use in the event of an accident.

Good idea? I expect there'll be nay-sayers, but I think they're both very good ideas.

We had a problem when my friend's husband had a heart attack whilst she was in UK visiting friends, we called the emergency services but had no idea what their address was. We know where they live but don't know what the address is. My other friend had the presence of mind to take a phone book so she could find the address but now everyone has a list of our addresses, telephone numbers and emergency contact numbers both here and in UK. That way, we won't ever need to refer to it. Good idea, I say.

Yup, that's fine if your phone has no password to get into it!

They are an excellent idea. Horse-riders, bikers, cyclist, rock-climbers and the like, should all wear these. No, I don't have one, but think they are the best idea all round. Dog-tag. Perfect.

Actually, I had a chum who wore one, he is Dextrocardic, and was told that any Medics would need to know this. Which I guess they would!!

Hmmm ... I suppose a bottle-in-the-fridge would be useful if I was taken ill at home, but likelihood is that (at my age) someone else would be in the house and could advise emergency services. I think more likely, for me, that I would be in an accident out & about, or become ill when on my own. They say that mobile phones / wallets etc. get separated from people in such things as train crashes, so I have a photo of myself in my wallet, so that it can be reunited with me, with my blood group and ICE numbers on it. Same might apply to tax disc? - e.g. several cars involved in accident, first aiders get me out of the car and I am then separated from the tax disc; I figure people would look for a wallet for contact information etc.

My phone has a password so I don't think it would be much use storing ICE there (although I have seen APPs that present that information as screen-saver or similar (i.e. without password).

The message in a bottle scheme is primarily used by elderly people living alone. Users place a large sticker on the front of their fridge to alert emergency services that the information is inside.
However, emergency services don't tend to look for them....of more value to them is the immediate situation...the state of the place, breakages suggesting a fall, pill packets nearby and the symptoms displayed by the casualty.

I thought it was a great idea when I heard it but as it turns out, people who know better than I have their own way of assessing the situation.
And they scroll down the phone looking for 'mum' on younger people's phones or the most frequently called number at an accident (and will trace that to identify the person rather than just ring it) instead of searching for ICE.
We still have ICE on all my family's phones though, just in case...belt and braces as they say.

I used to laugh at the time but thinking back it was a good idea............when I was very young (10-12 years old) a pal of mine wasn't allowed out to play unless he had a piece of paper in his pocket with his address etc. I remember it was always the last question his mam would ask..............."Have you got your paper?"
