  • Bargain Basements, Forgotten Treasures

Spurred on by Damien Jay and Lumpy I've decided decided to open this thread, which in the original post it was about that little area we all probably have and mine is called the "Buy them in the summer sales while they're cheap then forget you have them pile"

I say a pile - it's actually housed in the loft, garage, cupboard under the stairs, etc, etc, etc. I think the two titles above should give you an idea of what it contains (please note that plants and seeds are not on this list. Neither are books, videos or magazines).

Off the top of my head amongst the content of the pile are :

6 rose arches (£3 each double them up great for growing squash up)
10 meter roll of plastic Coates steel wire garden fence (used 5m per 2 rose arches)
2 6x4x3 coldframe type grow tents from argos (£7.50 each a bargain)
2 6x4x6 greenhouse type grow tents (at £15 each almost disposable)
2 4 tier mini greenhouses from Wilko (at £3.50 they make cheap as chips staging)
A couple of rolls of self amalgamating SOS pipe repair tape (used to strengthen the joints of the green houses)
20 meters of para cord (to tie into the diagonals of the green houses to brace them)
Half a dozen cheap and nasty pound shop leaky hoses for half price (because I might use them)
A couple of Wilkos soaker hoses (same reason as above)
2 drill powered water pumps despite the fact I don't have a cordless drill powerful enough to drive them - in fact I don't have a cordless drill at all (but I MIGHT get one, the shop was closing down the next day and they were 59p each)
    2 hose pipe water meters
numerous multiple tap connectors so that if I connected them together if connect 48 hoses to a single waterbutt
11 watching planters with 3 planting spaces each (very expensive at £2.50 the lot)
10 four space stacking planters (because I bought these before I saw the above bargain)
40 5" plant pots which I nicked from a pub
6 5" plant pots with plastic domes (which links to the original post)
2 large window propogators (unheated) a quid each
mechanical water timers that don't work on water butts
mechanical timers that DO work on water butts

Of course these are only the things that come to mind. There's bound to be more.

Oh yes all this and the peat pots, the Velcro plant ties, a swoe (£2 - can you believe it), coconut coir blocks, plastic coated wire, copper sly tape, slug traps
    .
    .
    .
    .
Have you ever started something and though WHY OH WHY DID I START THAT? however I've typed far too much to delete this post.

Jayell - have you had treatment for compulsive hoarding? If not I can reccommend my therapist!

Like you I have a habit of keeping things 'just in case' - trouble is the 'case' rarely happens.

Our home is so small I don't have the luxury of hoard space anymore so I have to keep only things I need year by year. Saying that we have a large porch which, at the moment has - the clothes horse with washing on, a wooden table with Mr Lumps model thingy on, plant pots, mini greenhouse, progators, fleece, 4ft and 6fy cames as well as 2 rolls of wire. Everybody else around here has nice little table and chairs with vases of flowers!

I can't make out if you think you have a hoarding problem or are just sharing the list of treasure you have?
      :-)

I have some plant ties from wilko that were 10p each. And some greenhouse class whitener. and a few plant labels.
The hoses and timers sound useful

There's nothing in my allotment 'pile' yet as I'm a total newbie, so everything I get is being or will be used this year.

However, if I were to talk about my work 'pile' I could easily be typing for about 12 hours non-stop, and thats just for the props I can remember off the top of my head. If I were to actually go through the loft, garage, workshops etc I bet I could double that time lol.

I'm going to be following this thread with interest.

Maybe people who list a lot of 'Just in case' stuff might be motivated to advertise their unwanted treasure in a for sale section (Can't remember if there is a for sale thread without going back to the main forum page). Or list it on their local Freecycle group. Just a thought

My gardening bargain that i can remember are
            eBay staging £25
Wilko seeds from as little as 10P
JML Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter £1.49
Free metal crow bird (i'm going to fill it with soil and wild flower seeds hoping the flowers grow out of it bum)
Can't think of anything else but i'm sure there's loads more.
I guess my greenhouse would have to be the best. It came "free" with the house.

Mostly the latter with only a small pinch of the former. Most of the bits have been earmarked for use. So the rose arches garden fencing and plastic coated wire will give me 4 3' wide vertical growing areas at the end of me beds.

The hoses and timers are going onto the beds and waterbutts so I can water one bed while weeding another (or having a sandwich). The proporgators are going to start be used now. Need to start off toms to go into the grow tent, the other I want to use to try and grow melons.
