Many years ago when my father used to drive me to school we regularly used to see a dog, at the busy main road into the city, sitting and waiting at a zebra crossing (Belisha beacons in those days) for traffic to stop so it could cross the road to the large park on the other side.
My father always stopped. Sometimes traffic coming the other way would stop at once, often a lot of cars would keep going, but the dog never tried to cross until the traffic was stopped both ways.
Some friends of mine had a dog called Jack. He was well known in the village which had a bypass but the main road through was still very busy. He lived on that road. He used to cross the road using the pedestrian crossing. No one had ever taught him, I can only assume that he learnt how it worked by watching us humans.
