Used the water-retaining gel in nappies as water retaining gel for plants? No - I buy water retaining gel. At the end of the season in Wilko etc when it's cheap.

Next time I'm babysitting the G Kids 1 or 2 might be the cost so I can have a go.

I have wondered but never done it. I think someone said they done it on Laura thread for grape hints and tips.

I am going by Hazels post as I can't get the link to work

I've stopped using water retaining gel - the break-down products from it may be problematic for food crops, and I couldn't be sure that compost in Tubs was isolated, at the end of the season, from spent compost re-used for vegetable pots, and that it didn't get into the compost heap (and from there back to the veg patch)

(I don't have a link, but if anyone wants to try Googling for it from memory it was an article by Linda Chalker-Scott [a Prof, or failing that a Dr. I forget which, sorry!])
