I've stopped using water retaining gel - the break-down products from it may be problematic for food crops, and I couldn't be sure that compost in Tubs was isolated, at the end of the season, from spent compost re-used for vegetable pots, and that it didn't get into the compost heap (and from there back to the veg patch)
(I don't have a link, but if anyone wants to try Googling for it from memory it was an article by Linda Chalker-Scott [a Prof, or failing that a Dr. I forget which, sorry!])
