I would be cautious about using a steam cleaner on (cheap or badly fitted!) laminate floor as forcing steam into all the gaps is might make the laminate swell up - depends what it's made of.

Also I'd be cautious of using a steam cleaner on (wool) carpets as you could strip off any 'stainguard' type protective coating on the fibres making them more porous to spills next time round.

I'd certainly use one for ceramic floors/tiles and for grease removal on ovens (if that's possible).

Its for kitchen ceramic tiles mainly, Hazel. No laminate here - just ancient woodblock and I wouldn't risk unsticking them!
Might try it on the settee, see if it can remove a few marks. Dunno really until I have one in my hot sticky hand.

I think that on fabrics, I'd clean with the steamer, let it all dry, then spray with Sc0tchguard type stuff so that marks don't go right into the fibres next time round.

Mine's an efbe-schott (which recommended it in 2012) works well on the tiles themselves, but the grouting gaps still seem to collect grease in them - so I end up getting the scrubbing brush out, sometimes. Grrrrr!

I think mine is a V*x one, too. Has blue cloths and a detergent option, plus a handheld with a million and one adaptor thingies! I used the handheld on the windows and it was fantastic!! You need to have a towel on the sill or floor, though, to catch the dirty water. It's very useful for getting up bits of dropped cat food or food that OH drops as he prepares lunch etc (I would never do such a thing...).

I have a Polti, which came with a (useless) floor mop attachment. I just use the spray nozzle and a bunch of cloths

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences with Steam mops. I've taken them all on board and have just taken delivery of this
6 IN 1 efbe-schott Steam Clean Orange Machine Steamer: Amazon.co.uk: Kitchen & Home.
Its cheap at £32, has a handheld bit and has good reviews.
I've tried it out on the grubby kitchen floor and the muddy pawmarks on the door. Also some of the grouting on the floor and walls. Its light to move around and its satisfying seeing the muck that it shifts Very pleased so far

Thank you for helping me make up my mind
