2 weeks back I was bitten (didn't see what bit me - of course!) A day later my ankle was really swollen, red and hot. Was bitten on the Sunday; by Wednesday it was sooo uncomfortable I had to literally hop down the stairs in the morning as to flex my ankle was very painful. rang the Docs later that day, who saw me after school and gave me anti-biotics. Now I'm not a great fan of Antibiotics, but I have to say, I took one that night and by morning it was already greatly improved. Anyway, doc said she reckoned it was a horse fly as they often get infected.
Couldn't find anything to sooth it whilst it was bad though.

I got a couple of tick removing tools at a country show last year, they work great on me and the dogs and get the whole of the animal out without leaving the mouth parts stuck under your skin to go septic. Outdoor shops might have them or a chemist may be able to order them.

Seen Deer in Caterham, and in Chipstead. All they would need is a green corridor - like the railway embankments/cuttings.......

          Some at Cane Hill too.
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!
