Roger and everyone else. The ad at the bottom of the screen has a hide button. Please press it and it'll disappear for a week until it expires at the end of the March.

Everything we do is in the best interests of the vine and we have to monetise where we can. We decided to add the bottom banner as an advertising spot because it seems less intrusive as it floated down the screen AND because we have a hide button. Every decision to include advertising is carefully thoughtout and only implemented when neccessary.

Please continue to support us as you have done. We'd hate to lose any members because of this!

Righty ho, the bottom bar is an advertisement that is there for a month, but there is a hide function that will close it for a week at a time.

I don't actually find it that annoying as its quite small on a portrait display tablet but I have to disagree about it disappearing for a week, it comes straight back as soon as you go on a different page, just checked again and it's definitely the case for me.

I got rid of it using BB's method. Thank you BB it keeps coming back but at least I now know how to get rid of it again!

The hide button is only a temporary fix though. It keeps coming back and its 1 advert too much - the side banners are bad enough, so I'll see you all in a month - unless I stick with an alternative forum.

Fully support the need for revenue but as said above, the hide only works until you change pages.

The blue bar is only hidden while I am on a page. The minute I switch pages it is back. It's quite large on my laptop, and I can't be faffed with having to re-hide it each time I move onto a new page. I can understand having to monetise it to cover costs, but this site has recently gone way over the top with the number of ads. It doesn't help if by having so many ads you make your site hard to use...

I don't think its a biggie either but admin seem to think hide makes it go forbabweek which is clearly incorrect.

I also barely notice the blue side bars as they are barely visible on an iPad mini in either portrait or landscape but I also find the hide button only works until the next page load, is it possibly an iPad issue?

Edit : just read further posts and it appears it's not iPad specific after all.

Yep. it's the same for me Alison, I was not aware of that when I posted, will nip into Admin thread & ask if they can make it disappear globally as opposed to one page at a time .

Sorry... But Its an ad too Far. Who ever agreed to this should be sacked. Thanks mods for trying, but admin seems to want to destroy what was the best gardening forum in the UK. The Vine is now now almost unusable. See you in a month, if we are still here.

Totally agree with arpoet...the blue sidebars are one thing but this ad at the bottom which pops up every time you change page is a complete pain in the you know what! Step too far right enough!

Will try to work through it but can see me on the forum less often which is a shame as it really is the best forum out there!

Dave, before I head off to the plot, I wanted to highlight my earlier post on this thread and help the vine with constructive feedback. I'm a fairly new user but I do pay a subscription for the GYO mag so I already have a value to GYO without any accidental clicks I make on my phone.

Perhaps I am an exception here but I can barely see content behind all the ads when I switch off my adblocking software. It is actually this forum that made me install the software, I don't think I have seen more in your face advertising for a while, since those pornographic/gambling pop-ups in the early days of the internet.

Credit to the mods who jumped on this concern so promptly by the way, I'm sure that will go a long way in keeping members on the forum.
