The Magazine don't (as far as I know??) provide answers to questions here. "Regulars" and "old hands" do. The Magazine benefits from that free service to them - it attracts an Audience, they may then subscribe to the magazine.
If the site is cumbersome to use the regulars will go elsewhere. I'm only one voice, but I have ditched this forum for many months at a time, in the past, when it has become a pain to use - usually as a result of poorly rolled out upgrades that caused massive disruption to the site. Seems like this footer-ad feature wasn't properly tested before being rolled out ...
This forum has one of the worst implementations of the various forums I use. I'm only here because it has a high rate of questions and my aim is to give something back about a topic I know a little about, as I am a "taker" all over the internet. I'm dyslexic, I can't assimilate information easily and the more clutter, and the more moving images, then the slower it is for me to be able to digest a page view. I have everything turned off to avoid that (Ads and also Signatures / Avatars / etc.). But I'm technical, and I know how to do that ... others may just Click off the site.
I am very sceptical that banner ads raises much revenue ... no way of knowing the answer to that one of course. But if the ads annoy the users, both the regulars who provide answers and/or make it difficult for Newbies to register & ask questions then there won't be any users!! and ergo no advertising revenue.
As a result of this exercise several regulars are now using an Ad Blocker - so they are never again going to be clicking through any advert ...K's Garden blog the story of the creation of our garden

I just tried turning off the ad block briefly. Shudder. I hadn't realised how bad it had got. Those flashing ones really do my head in. I had thought I could maybe be more selective in the blocking, after all I do want to support the forum as well as subscribing to the mag. But it's too much. Ad block back on again now.

I agree that the ads are distracting especially for people like me who have very poor eyesight and therefore struggle to focus on the page centre's.
However, I like this site, with its warts and all appearance because it is the only one I have found where a question, any question, no matter how simple or innocently daft is not answered with ridicule, scorn or patronising boardom.
I have grown veg for a few years but still do and will always class myself as a novice because there is something new to learn on a daily basis.
I envy those you have all the experience they need to be able to cope with any situation or answer any question with knowledgeable authority but I will never be that sure of myself and it is nice to be able to rely on others to help me out.I have not failed. Hi all- just nipping in from not at all sunny cheshire!
Cor blimey - what a change in format in 2 days
I understand it's all just a temporary matter but peeps do need to bare with it for now- sorry n all- ad blocks as best you can folks if you can't stand the format as it is at the moment.
Just be aware that we mods also have to spend a heck of a lot of time checking up on spammers and have no choice but to look at all this, so needless to say we're up there at the front of the queue nagging Admin!

What admin needs to remember is not every one has brand new computer with lots of ram and super fast broadband. I installed adblocker because the ads on here were far to hungy and slowed my system to snails pace... and you all know what i do with snails.

Normal: page load time (including all the adverts loading, which happens, in part, post-main-page-load) 35 seconds. Part of the advert tracking is then continuing to run, and "phone home", periodically thereafter - so still using some bandwidth if the page is just left open on the computer. Size of page 1,200 KBytes.
Ad Block enabled: Page loaded in 7 seconds. Total size 98.9 KBytes - i.e. 92% smaller !!Last edited by Kristen; 28-02-2015, 12:42 PM.K's Garden blog the story of the creation of our garden

I have two pale blue side bars. But I can't see them fully which is bizarre. I wasn't bothered but since reading 15 pages from you lot now I am! I can't actually click on them to see what they are though! I'm on an iPad which I got off my Dad when the computer finally gave up. I have so many ads on the forum, they are in between posts, at the top, bottom and sides but I have no idea if there is an equivalent to ad blocker for iPad?You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...
I'm an official nutter - an official 'cropper' of a nutter! I am sooooo pleased to be a cropper! Hurrah!
