Volunteering work

I am thinking about going into volunteering working while I am looking for a job.
I am fed up of staying in the flat every single day looking for jobs and not getting one. And now that I don't have a garden, I have nothing to do. It's driving me mad.
Does anyone on here do it? And if so, is it worth it not getting paid?

I would think it could help in future interviews ... Q. What have you been doing since you were last employed .... A. Along with actively seeking gainful employment, I have been doing regular volunteer work at ??????? which gets me out of the house, keeps me socially aware & gives me a sense of purpose .... type of thing

I wonder if Tatton Park need a volunteer gardener, great advantage would be doing that you get free National Trust membership

I volunteer helping to run our village hall. I think it does make a difference to your state of mind and also socially if you don't tend to go out much with friends etc. I went from full time employed to house mum and it was a culture shock. So although I don't do a vast amount volunteering it is enough to make a difference. Volunteering does open up a whole new range of opportunities and also looks better on a cv. If you are fed up in the flat and its getting you down then I would say go for it. Wether it is charity shops, dog walking for rescue centres, gardening in stately homes or community gardens etc. etc. it really can be as little or much as you want.

Alhough you dont have garden, i bet there are lots of older/less-able people nearby who would love someone to help look after thier garden, maybe in return for a small veg plot you can use yourself.

If you are claiming any benefits whilst job seeking you need to ask them what sort of volunteering you're allowed to do. It's a great idea though.

Sounds like you need something to fill that void Cariann so have a think of what it is you fancy doing then go for it.

There may be a volunteering organisation that will have lists of places who need volunteers!

My mum volunteered at the hospital ticking names off a list as people arrived for a clinic. She said almost all the desk staff were volunteers there!

I'd like to work with the elderly. Even tho that is the kind of work I am looking for but I love it! So I might as well carry on.

I love sitting there listening to them telling me about when they was younger. Some people have quite interesting lives.

I think most hospitals have a volunteer service, maybe helping out at feed times on one of the Elderly wards may be good.
