This is clearly a battlement guage. Used by masons in the 12th century. One mason would stand at the top of the castle and the other would stand on the ground some distance away and look through the guage and advise his mate up top if the spacing of battlements were correct. its use was discontinued in the 13th century when tape measures were invented.photo album of my garden in my profile http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...my+garden.html
