  • Before I got an allotment, I never thought I would...

So I'm new to all of this allotment malarkey... There is so much more to it than I thought there would be, but one thing I have found since I have got my plot, is that I'm ending up doing things I never thought I would be..

For example, today I found myself pulling paving slabs (flags they call them 'up north') from a skip in Aldi Car Park in the middle of the day (I had asked the builders renovating said Aldi Store if it was okay to recycle them), while the skip wagon waited for me to get the best ones out before taking the skip away to be emptied.
I caused a bit of chaos in the Car Park and the security guy wasn't very happy, but I now have 17 good quality slabs for the plot!

So it got me thinking, that there must be some great stories out there from you lot, that have only come about because you have an allotment...

    Over to you!

Before having an allotment, I never thought I'd happily pull water proof over-trousers and wellies on over my office skirt on a public highway in order to get plottering in my lunch break...

Before I got my allotment I never dreamt I'd do a happy dance at the sight of a giant pile of horse poo

Eating broccoli and carrots. Can't stand them - unless I've grown them myself.
          Praying for rain
Telling my boss that the reason I didn't answer my phone was because I was in a large pile of manure at the time.
Begging people to take courgettes off me.
Eyeing up piles of discarded junk going hmmmm.

It's not just allotmenteers you know that find themselves doing things they might have either got arrested for or burned at the stake centuries ago.

Last year I had to roll 2 tyres from the shop to the back of the car because they were too heavy to lift for a feek and weeble person like me - my problem was I was in 3in heels, on my way home from a christening. Mr Lump declined helping as he was in his posh, very expensive 'all occasions' suit and sat in the car alternating between howling laughter and indignant shame.
I got a round of applause as I curtseyed to the mechanics.

Picking a bag of compost up and saying 'pig poo' as the end of the bag split open and buried my feet, which were in flip flops ankle deep.

Learning not to squeal, in a high pitched falsetto each time I have to pick a slug up - can't quite stop the shudder thouh.

Never imagined I'd have been happy hovering over an orange bucket having a pee!

Nor wearing a plastic bag on my head whilst digging up a couple of rows of spuds! ( yup- it was raining! )

Never thought I'd get neurotic about two consecutively humid days during the summer (followed by the anxious wait to see if the potato/tomato leaves start to go brown)

Never realised I could spend so long in a shop looking at packets of seeds and then spending so much time sorting the seeds.
Getting grubby down the garden well I've always got mucky gardening I'm afraid to say.

I never thought I would give up decent nails, a forefinger without ingrained dirt, a monthly shoe budget and a cocktail habit in favour of grubbing about in the mud, scavenging from skips & cardboard bins and racing others to get the steamiest horse poo for my daleks.

I DID however realise I would get hooked on seeds pretty early on...

I never would have thought I would be digging over a bit of field in the cold and rain, having only found out weeks before that I was pregnant

I never thought I would be driving around the outskirts of Bolton with this on the roof of a tiny van...

As we drove past a wedding party standing outside a church, all of their heads followed the coop... and we seemed to put a smile on loads of faces as we drove through town....

Perhaps you had to be there....

I never imagined myself happily trundleing along the country lanes, being beeped at by a few drivers whilst I try and control my wobble wheeled wheelbarrow that I had just collected from the next village over whilst at the same time eyeing up the small buddleia growing alongside the road and wondering if I could squeeze one in somewhere
