  • Tragic loss

    Drive safely people.

This week I had an unfortunate reminder of just how fragile life is, and how easily it is taken away.

On Monday of this week a dear friend of our family was killed in a car accident.

A couple of years ago a Dutch student came to stay at our house for six months whilst she worked for me at our company to improve her English and as work experience. As I'm sure you can imagine, during her time with us she almost became part of the family - we looked on her as a little sister (she was 19 at the time).

I received a call from my boss on Monday night this week to tell me that Linda was killed that day. I was absolutely numb with shock. I then had to tell my wife and her brother (who has lived with us during and after Linda). Needless to say it was not a happy household.

The galling thing is this, and I know this is going to sound cliche, but I am completely genuine. She was one of the most energetic, positive and kind people I have ever met. This year she came to stay with us again at Easter and celebrated her 21st birthday with us. We were talking with her about her plans for the future, and she was undecided about continuing her education, or taking a year out. We both said that she should take a year out as she has the rest of her life ahead of her...

Sometimes the smallest things can haunt you.

Our thoughts are with her parents, she was an only child.

We are flying over to Holland on Friday night as the funeral is at 10am on Saturday.

Times like these that really hit home just how much of a risk we take when getting in the car.

    Take care people.

I'm well aware that there really aren't any adequate words in such a situation.

All my sympathies to you and to Linda's family. So terribly sad.

Hey Wayne, I'm so sorry for your loss. I think sometimes the hardest thing is people look out and the world goes on as normal as if nothing had happened when the world has come to an end for the people concerned. If it helps in any small way I am thinking about you, and I really do know what that kind of pain feels like. My sincere condolonces to you. To Linda's parents, there is nothing I can say except I can't even imagine your grief. I hope all goes as well as it can for you in the circumstances.

From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.

Brought tears to my eyes Hey Wayne, so very sorry. I know there are no words I can help with, but my thoughts and sincere condolences are with you and both families. A lesson to us all to make the most of our time here and keep our loved ones near, let them know they are loved and appreciate every minute. Take good care. Sue

Thank you all for your kind words - I am very grateful, and I know Linda's parents will take great comfort from all the messages they recieve. Linda's college set up an on-line condolence page, and the amount of messages just show how many lives Linda touched in such a short space of time.

Very sorry to hear of your loss Heywayne, any loss of life is tragic but seems more so when it's someone so young.
