Asparagus!
Spent over an hour today down the lottie trying to dig up & out the old Asparagus bed the previous owner left behind.
I naively thought it'd be easier than turning and de weeding the rest of the ground...
Yep, I'm a moron!
The root structure is thick and so well established I was worried my fork was going to snap a few times.
Only managed to do one of the two rows, and even then the row I did was more of a loosen up and get up some of the roots. It's going to take a few more passes I think to get more out; even then I'm not sure it'll all come out. =/
Ah well, no fun if it is all easy, right?
Some better news though, the first of the "Grown from Seed" Bonsai material went into the ground over the weekend. Which pleased me no end. I'd been waiting on the Weed Control Fabric I ordered to arrive, when it did I made haste and covered the first 3 Bonsai beds with it, then covered it with what stock of fired clay I had to keep it in place, help with moisture retention and increase humidity for the trees. Think I need a few more bags to get the spread and depth to where I want it, but for now it's doing the job. So far the Bonsai I planted a few weeks back all seem to be coping well with the transition. The Chinese Elm are really starting to push out new growth and the Larch (The big Larch was my biggest concern) and Fuji Cherry tree have shown a little shock at the move, but both are showing new growth even if some of the needles/leaves have browned off. Fingers still crossed they continue to settle in well.
Then I forked over another area I had already weeded and turned over a while ago, giving it a good turning over again and raking good and hard. Covered it with fabric and made slits for the Japanese Pagoda seedlings which have been itching to get in the ground. In about a week they should really take and start to go nuts if all goes well! These are stunning little trees, the foliage is lovely when they wind blows through them and they can be very vigorous once established.
