He didn't set it up, I did. I have a degree in IT and business studies. But, I can't get my head round Windows 8.1. I hate it with a vengeance. It's a horrible, unusable load of s??t.
I have run the problem down to one of their "automatic" updates that are run in the background. But I don't know how to undo whatever they did to stop the Internet from working. I've probably made the situation worse. I was actually using the laptop when the Internet suddenly stopped working about a week ago. I only have the IPad and that has stopped working with the printer as well.
Why not upgrade to windows 10 Janie, with your IT knowledge you can edit the registry and stop the updates happening if you think they might be an issue?
Evening...it's now raining but managed to get some towels dried before it started so all is not lost!
Off to London tomorrow and then Germany on Friday for a couple of days so will not be on the forum this weekend...looking forward to catching up on all the gossip on Monday! Son on puppy sitting duty which basically means lounging around the couch for 4 days pretty much doing nothing!

Um! Because I need to be able to connect to the Internet to do this. It's a bit like the "there's a hole in my bucket" conundrum.

Evening all. Started raining here about 1ish and hasn't stopped since.
I rang my mom and dad today to see if they were ok after all the digging they had done yesterday. Turns out they went home a different way and spotted an allotment site near their house. They pulled in and met the guy who sorts the plots out. Yep you guessed it they wandered round and got the pick of 7 vacant plots. Both very excited about it. So going to see it on Friday.
Anyway have a good evening everyone

You don't need an internet connection to access the registry Janie, just remember to do a back-up before changing any settings
While I have no formal IT qualifications I have been "fiddling" for a good many years, from past experience I would start looking at either a driver issue or possibly firewall exceptions (particularly if it is a wireless printer)
Updating to windows 10 will give you a new GUI but do very little to assist with your current problem.
