  • Jay, I have been dabbling in it for many years although only got seriously into it after I moved to Ayrshire as my father's mother's grandparents had lived in Prestwick and Monkton before moving to Glasgow in 1861. I found her grandfather to be a fascinating character and followed his life as closely as I could - he had a number of jobs and at one time was the librarian at Monkton and was mentioned in just about every page of the Monkton Library records from 1839 till 1857. He is mentioned in Strawhorn's history of Prestwick, (not by name), as the first dealer in kail and potatoes in Ayrshire in the Monkton 1851 census. Her grandmothers side of the family were even more interesting as they were Freemen of Prestwick - according to local tradition the Freedoms were granted by Bruce after Bannockburn for services rendered - in any event the Charter was renewed in the 1600s by King James. The records in the local archives proved a goldmine and I have lost count of the fascinating bits and pieces I found about this side of the family over many years of research. The local graveyards have been well preserved in the past and it is a strange feeling to nip in and place your hands on a gravestone below which the occupants, (my ancestors), who were born in the 1700s now reside.

      • Sorry...Mornin all!

Just noticed it's getting lighter later in the mornings...deffo a change.
Having said that, dawn is a wonderful time of the day...listening to the birds, watching out for deer in the back field...seeing the dusky grey colour of the garden slowly change to green...lovely!

        • Morning all.

Eventually success with new phone! I knew exactly what I wanted having spent time the day before researching etc. so bought it, signed contract, choose colour, yes it's PINK!

Then cancelled existing one, they weren't happy and offered me another deal! Like they do, but why wasn't this 'deal' on their website!, only a few £'s different so not worried at all, and am very happy with new one, and very nice young man who set it up. Told me all about his huge 'sunflowers' he us growing!

              • Morning all. Up early taking OH to work again. Got two loads of washing done already and vacuuming next.
Then off to post office to get parcel posted off the VC
This afternoon we are off to the allotment to plant the fruit bushes that I got from Aldi the other day. So my little assistants today can dig some holes for me today. That should keep them busy for a few minutes.
                Have a good day everyone

                • On my mum's side, cousins from both of her parents have published our family histories. On my grandmothers side all the way back to William the Conqueror.

i know very little about my fathers side. My grandpa was a policeman and so was his father, but my grandpa died when I was 5. His family didn't get on with my grandmother as they felt he'd married beneath him. The members of her family that I met (my dad didn't encourage this) I could see their point. I don't even know her maiden name and I'll have to wait until the next census is published before I can research further.

                  • I'm jealous NVG, I'm a bit slow this morning. No washing on yet and as I was away over the weekend and it rained yesterday it's a washing mountain.
Very grey and overcast here but I think it's gonna dry up

                    • Morning all - I am quite 'behind' this morning. Was going to go to aerobics this morning, but my foot and ankle are still quite painful and swollen - a flippin' insect of some kind bit me on Saturday night (garden party at neighbour's house) and I have, as usual, reacted badly to it.

Need to get myself together and get the piccalilli made and then will attempt to put boots on (will the right one fit?) and get down the plot. I bought a couple of autumn fruiting raspberry canes at Aldi - £1.79 each, such a bargain.

I can go to Weds evening aerobics, foot permitting!

I am off to the Vale of Uffington on Friday for a guided walk around the White Horse and a couple of other Neolithic sites. Really quite excited about it - haven't ever done anything like this before so I need to be able to walk - 6.5 miles in total.

                      Have a good day everyone.

JanieB - Your cousins have greatly exceeded anything that most people will ever get near - reasonable expectation unless connected to Royalty is to get back to mid/late 1700s and many people can't even get back that far - in West of Scotland most of us have Irish connections on at least one side and the movement between Ireland and Scotland was extensive even before the potato famine and as a result it is quite normal to run into a dead end on at least one leg of the family. I have had a couple of visits to Ireland and found the local officials extremely helpful - at one place the young girl in the tourist info office phoned the local registrar and was then able to tell me not only exactly when my mother's grandparents were married but that they were married in the church just around the corner. :-)

                            • Furthest I've been back to is my 7x Great Grandfather on my mothers side. Rev. John Laing born around 1670 in Caithness who was a tutor in Perth and eloped with one of the daughters of the person he was employed by to North Uist. Love all that kind of thing!

                              • Beautiful balmy sunny day here. No wind for a change. Spent the morning tidying the garden and now stopped for a cuppa and the daily crossword.
Still lots to do but a lovely day to do it.
