We find slug trails in the kitchen some mornings not sure how they get in. but their favourite spot is under the cooker.

I've not heard (or seen it should be) the word 'stookie' in ages.

I guess I've eventually become English now.

She really has worked hard, one of those that's on the go all the time, fitted in a part time job, plays an instrument etc she got 3Bs in her Mocks so was hoping for similar results yesterday. I think 3 hard subjects didn't help. Though she's now looking at apprenticeships instead.

                • Morning all - I haven't heard the word stookie for years either - a lot of the words I was brought up with in Glasgow have gone out of use/fashion over the years and the vast majority of the people I know speak proper English but I have never got out of the habit and still use many of them in day to day conversation though rarely in written communication - I can clearly remember my brother and myself going on holiday to Rome in 1964 and he had been trying very successfully to eradicate all traces of the Glesca dialect from his speech for some years whereas I had more or less continued to speak the way I always had - the result was none of the staff in the hotel could understand a word I said unless I slowed my speech to a crawl - however, we still got on great with everyone and were invited to the Chambermaid's house to watch Liverpool playing Inter Milan and her parents served us with cake and wine - thankfully IM won the game. On leaving the food waiter came to see us off on our train and handed in two bottles of wine from his father's vineyard and said he would score two goals for us when he played on Saturday - possibly the best holiday I ever had

Off to allotment this morning to do a bit of tidying up for the show.

                  • Maybe we should do a 'a Word for the Day' thread, incorporating local words and what they mean.

You are right Shen, a lot of the old words are not in use now. I never hadn't grandparents growing up but the OH did and some of the things granny came away with were amazing. Could have written a book.

Looks like it has swelled up a little so he has gone back to hospital just in case it needs reset.

She shouldn't worry - exams are not the be all and end all and she can always take them again - I left school at 15 without any educational qualifications or O levels as they were called back then. Hard work and commitment are the important things - just takes a little longer. I was eventually promoted to a senior manager level and after I retired I was taken back as a consultant for a great part of the following 9 years.
