  • Yes please VC, got any biscuits to go with it? Put a chicken in the oven and baked spuds for tea as I didn't want to spend hours cooking and wanted to get my garlic planted up this afternoon. Just come in to put some veg on, to find son finishing off 3 bacon rolls!!! that is one problem with the Aga, all the cooking smells go up the chimney! Hmm, don't suppose he'll be wanting dinner.

My garlic is still staring at me, pleading to be planted....I will do it today.
Scarlet - I should be ok - VC always makes allowances for dumb animals but I'm glad you found it amusing and hope you didn't lose too much coffee.

You have plenty of time for putting in garlic - I still have 50% of mine left to plant. If I recollect correctly garlic needs a few -10% temperatures before it comes to life. I have put it in as late as late December but have to say that last year's crop was the best I have had - put in mid-late October.
I think my success this year lay in the soil preparation and feeding.- good luck

There's always someone odd there who wants to talk to me. When a shop assistant asked me the time that seemed quite normal - except I don't have a watch, so I had to pull out my pedometer from somewhere in the depths of my cleavage

I put plenty of compost in the soil and blood, fish and bone which I use for everything before planting - I gave another feed of BF&B in April and a further one 6 weeks later. I also kept the bed more or less weed free throughout the growing season :-)

            • Talking about feeding things, my amaryllis needs repotting and feeding. I know I've got half a bag of potting compost somewhere but due to the upheaval caused by the building works I can't find it. I'm reluctant to buy another bag just for one pot. I could just water it and hope for the best but experience tells me I won't have any flowers unless I repot it.

Thanks for the good wishes Shen, but as have said in previous posts I use raised beds in the garden, my problem is that there are large trees starting no more than six feet from my raised beds and once their roots get into the beds they become a right mess of roots that are very difficult to remove, and they remove all the moisture and nutriants from the garden, but as I said if I didnt have them to keep me busy out side OH would keep me busy papering inside.

                • Thanks Shen, I fed mine this year with B F & B but although the green leaves looked really healthy the bulbs were small and opened up into individual cloves!

                  • Good evening Folks, it has been very cloudy and colder here today but unable to get any work done, let OH. get me to take her to a garden centre, so she could buy me lunch, ( have you noticed how women are happiest when spending money) but just had lunch and back home as leg was too sore, I am now going to have a seat and elevate my leg, and read a book.
Well I wish you all a good night, and hope you have a good week, and if you are at work thinking of your next day off, remember, some of us dont get any days off, Goodnight

What bulbs did you get and when did you plant them?

Jay, I have never experienced that - last year the bulbs were quite small but compact - I suppose it might depend on which ones you buy? - the difference this year or those that were planted last year was in the soil preparation before planting.
