I'm inclined to agree with Two Sheds - I do have home and contents insurance (if you're in a union, check out whether you can get a better deal through them.) I also have car insurance, as required by law. When my car was stolen, through no fault of mine, the insurance company decided it was worth £100 - which was my excess - all I got back was 5 months' worth of car tax. And they wonder why people don't bother.

This thread has certainly made me think how lucky I am to 1) be in a job 2) be able to afford house/contents insurance 3) not to live somewhere that has been flooded. OK so money may be a bit tight, but I'm grateful for what I've got. If anyone does need anyhelp re: plants etc. let me know. Bernie

Valmarg....not at all. I have been luck that I have always been in work. Ok I have gone out when I was out of work and chased to find a job have have done some rotten jobs. And have never expected to be given handouts. When I left home I stood on my own two feet.

Yes you should plan for the worst.

BUT.....some of these people are OAPS on basic state pensions. Working familes on low incomes who's insurance my not pay out for everything thay have lost.

And my point exactly....we have some dirty irish bloke on the TV ranting for handouts for Afirca again,,,and you know 90% of it is going to be stolen by the Govenments of those countries. As we all know the 1980s famine in Eitheopia was manmade by the govenment of that country as part of the civil war.

Where is the fund for these people.

They can throw as much money at Africa as people are daft enough to give. The problem will never be solved, until they take out the corrupt governments. A belter that springs to mind is Mugabe.

40 years ago the famine was Biafra. In the ensuing years there has been man made famine after famine out there. All aid given goes into corrupt leaders' pockets.

"Make Poverty History". It wouldn't hurt to try that philosophy in the UK!!

I am more than willing to help out with seeds/cuttings etc. Like DDL seeing what has happened to others and reading this thread makes me count my blessings. We in theory should be at risk but the drainage required by a major railway line, dual carriageway and docks area probably does us a lot of favours.

I'm there wtih DDL too, I feel soooo lucky. There's me moaning my toms aren't ripening - how very lucky am I, I have a job even tho it doesnt pay that well, a garden even if it's small, and we're not flooded. I feel bad I cant help with plants this year but am definitely there in spirit wishing peeps well and I certainly wont be moaning any more!
