Going back to the original problem.

If you are physically unable to reach and remove the body, then Nature will have to run its course.

Having the central heating on won't remove the smell but it will speed up the natural process so the smell will leave of its own accord sooner rather than later.

Liberal use of Febreze will help. Though bear in mind that all these sort of air fresheners can adversely effect those with asthma etc.

        Not surprised.

I suppose, once they too are gone you'll be needing to thoroughly wash and disinfect everything ( rats piddle all the time - everywhere)

Wire wool is brill for blocking entry points as they can't chew through it

good luck- I have every sympathy x

Jen - how awful for you and your family.
Did you call in the Council to deal with the problem earlier this year? http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...rid_84957.html
If so, I suggest you get them back as a matter of urgency and ask their help in dealing with the decomposing rat and the young rats.
You have a young child and have to put her welfare before that of the rats.

Oh gosh...somehow I'd missed your original thread!

            You have my utmost sympathy.

I'd definitely chase up the council so they are aware this is an on going situation.

Yeah I have the council out every month to put posion down but I think they must be immune or something? I bought the retokil poison that has killed the mammy rat well I think it was my posion thats done it. The problem is they are all next door in a old outhouse Ive reported it but the land lord does nothing and the council are powerless/usless. Ive got vids of the rats coming out onto the roof and watch me through my window. They were also in an abandoned takeaway over the road which didnt help as the whole 2 streets and pubs were over run with rats once they were disturbed when the baliffs went in.

So over night we have caught 3 and the bf has seen 2 more this morning. I am hoping that is the last of them. I will try the wire wool meathod to when I find where they are coming from. Thanks guys for hearing me out, no authorities want to listen and just dont care.

Make a nuisance of yourself. The more you annoy them the more they will want to do something to get you off their case I know it seems a bit mean but I find it is the only way to get a lot of people to do anything nowadays

I would have thought that Environmental Health would have to be involved, but perhaps they are.

Have you tried going to the press?

Try contacting your local councillor (the one for your council, for your area) https://www.gov.uk/find-your-local-councillors - stress your situation in terms of having a young child and how long this has been going on. They can put pressure on council officers to get things done. Good luck - it must be horrible.

Back in April a kitten walked out from under a hedge in our garden, no one knew where he came from so we ended up keeping him even though I didn't want a cat because of the birds. He has a bell on his collar now but the amazing thing is he has recently caught four rats!

I'm not sure that this is helpful as I don't think cats normally bother with rats?

I hope a solution can be found to your rat problem and the the horrible smell soon fades.

Well my councilor lives 3 doors off me and is a complete prat, I have emailed him so I have record he said I will call the council and ask them to deal with it, this was last year and still nothing. I have 3 kids one that had open heart surgery and when she come out of hospital we were over run by them and they still done nothing.Ive been to work all day and in that time we have caught 7 rats!! I am getting more and more angry as the day goes on. Ive put the ones caught today in a container and I am going to the council with them tomorrow and depending on my mood and the reaction I get off them its up to them what happens with the rats. Ive got pics of a few of the big ones I caught I only wish I kept them but the bin men came on thur so they are long gone.

That's unacceptable!!!!!!!! 7 in one day!!!!!! It makes your home uninhabitable!!!!

Go to the council first thing tomorrow and DEMAND a visit from the Environmental Health Officer NOW and tell them that if they do nothing about it you will make it public in the local and national press. That may get them moving!

                            Best of luck

Thanks guys, I ran this morning and they said someone is coming out on wed although its not a guaranteed appointment. Then to ring them in 7 days and get them out again. They said they don't do appointments. I'm fuming here. I've told them multiple times where they are coming from as they ask every time I ring. I don't understand why they put poison down, if they just dealt with the problem in the first place then there would be no more rats. I am going up to see my councillor again today and Ill threaten him with the papers if all doesn't go well. I am also going to take the rats to the next door neighbours who own the abandoned out house where I shot the vid below.
I've been up since 5am just waiting for the trap to go off again and again, so I am very tired and ratty (mind the pun) so lets see how today plays out.

                              Sorry about the rant guys

This is the vid to show where they are coming from, its at the very beginning and its in the crack in the roof. They run across this roof every night
                              https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrnILXZy5IQ

These are what I caught in a whole day and night, one is missing as we caught it alive and let it go in an abandoned industrial estate.

These are in the container above but we were surprised there was 2 in one trap.

This is an adult one we caught about a month ago, well we found it in the bottom of the water butt

This is another adult we caught inside. Not the biggest we have caught.

Had a look at the video several times but can't see the rats!

Best of luck with the councillor. Don't let him fob you off. If you have a problem and he is only three doors away he probably has one too although not as bad as yours. Present him with the dead rats as well.
