Also not really a saying but my father overheard a conversation at market one day between a very posh member of the hunt and a farmer who was selling a pony. The posh guy said "Nice pony, what was it by?" (meaning what is its parentage). The farmer thought long and hard and then said "Well it's been by itself in the bloody field"

IIRC, the cats & dogs thing harks back to when there were open gutters in the streets & people disgarded anything into them, including dead animals in a downpour everything in the gutter was washed along

I was told that in the real olden days thatch roofs were steeper to discard snow etc. and allow smoke to rise. Because of the warmth Cats and dogs would perch on the thatch, but heavy rain would make it hard to grip and anyway they wanted to get out of the rain so they fell off - hence raining cats and dogs. Probably only half true like many sayings.
