  • Fabric crafters..... help please!!!

I was chatting to an English lady a while back who said she cut through several layers of fabric at the same time using something like a stitch cutter.
I just presumed I could find something at Hobbycraft on my next UK visit, but I can't seem to see anything which resembles what she described!

Does anyone understand, and explain what it is I need?
It's for cutting along the top few layers of fabric which have been sewn together in 2 parallel rows leaving the bottom layer of fabric intact.
Apparently it gives a nice straight cut rather than lots of little snips from a small, thin pair of scissors.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!!!

It sounds a bit like a rotary cutter which is like a wheel shaped blade with a handle. You place a cutting mat underneath, fabric on top and it can cut through more than one layer depending how hard you press and the thickness of fabric. However, I don't understand the bit where you say about the bottom layer of fabric being left intact. This cuts through all layers.

This is what it all looks like. I use it mainly for quilting. You can cut along suitable rulers for straight lines or freehand.

Thanks- but I've seen that- but it's different!

With this 'thing' you can 'tear/cut' your way through say 4 layers of thin fabric and not cut the attached bottom layer.

it's used instead of doing this with scissors and looks ( apparently) a bit like a stitch unpicker....

Why do you not want to cut through the bottom layer?

I've got an A1 size cutting mat you can have of you like. The only thing I found with the rotary cutters is that the blade didn't stay sharp for very long.

Also how often do you plan to use it & what's your budget as they range from hand held to electric versions. I worked in tailoring for 10 years so know a little about it, obviously we used industrial machines, would be ok if you know of any companies about to fold.

                    There are various versions here:

You may be better off with a good pair of tailors shears.

I think you are right generally ....but apparently they are too chunky to get into a 1cm 'tunnel' of fabric without having to do lots of little 'snips'?????

I'll be intrigued to see what the cushions look like when done This is not a technique I've seen before. Sounds quite modern.
