  • Figure Fuddling

During a period of bordem, I was looking at the forum figures below & GYO claim that we have almost 65,300 members...............yeh right. I wonder how many "active" members there are.............I would wager there are no more than 100. I wonder if our advertisers are aware of this little oversight as I'm sure they will be told that a possible 65,000+ people could view their products...............Apologies as I'm really not sure what the point of this thread is, I just needed to get it off my chest with all the carp that's gone on over the last few months.

The amount of times I have mistakenly clicked on one of these ads probably looks as though there are 65,000 peeps on here!

You're most likely right Jay, all I know is due to number of members either leaving the vine or not visiting as much due to the ads & other annoyances, the vine is slowly becoming boring. Nothing personal to our current members, it's just gone a bit flat.

Whenever you g00gle a gardening question, the Vine comes up as one of the top responses. I expect we get large numbers of visitors who stop by occasionally by this route but never post anything. If the ads are relevant too, who knows, maybe the advertisers get their moneys worth from these people.

Boredom can drive you nuts, BM, I know
I've found a thread I started in July 2012 about numbers of Users.http://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gra...3pm_67080.html

          Here are a few extracts:-

On 25 July 2011 at 9.23pm the Forum had the " Most users ever online was 3,858,"

Exactly one year later (25 July 2012) - to the minute -

There are currently 1767 users online. 57 members and 1710 guests
Most users ever online was 3,858, 25-07-2011 at 09:23 PM.

          8th May 2014 -
          "Currently Active Users
There are currently 2093 users online. 70 members and 2023 guests
Most users ever online was 7,623, 06-04-2014 at 09:09 PM."

          And Now
There are currently 1544 users online. 40 members and 1504 guests
Most users ever online was 7,623, 06-04-2014 at 09:09 PM.

I would like to know what we were doing on 6th April 2014 - because its never been equalled again.

In the web marketing business you rely more on proper analytics software rather than registered membership totals. There's a service called Google Analytics which analyses the socks off a web site, showing you all sorts of clever stuff about visitors. It can't fully interpret the usage of a site like this one where the majority of the activity is centred on the discussion forum, but even basic analytics is the kind of rich data which a site owner should be touting to potential advertisers.

Well as the title says I went to the intro thread for some figures.

              07/14 - 20 intros
              08/14 - 19 intros
              09/14 - 14 intros

              07/15 - 14 intros
              08/15 - 7 intros
              09/15 - 7 intros

My belief was that if I was a newbie I would not join as I would not go looking round threads trying to find how to turn them all off. All though the intro thread is not an accurate measurement and it is only 3 months I think it still illustrates the point.

Nice one NG. It does indeed illustrate the point that fewer members are joining.

When I joined I didn't post on the intro thread so perhaps more have done the same? I enjoy this forum and although the ads sometimes drive me nuts it won't stop me reading it.

Just to add that I really only read the forum on my ipad where I can stretch the screen and reduce the ads.

The difference between the new member figures for 2014 & 2015 over the same time period, may be accounted for by the use of different anti spammer filtration which was applied after the great K1thc3n invasion which many will remember with dread.

When I joined I didn't post for years, literally. Way too scared of making a fool of myself. As you may have noticed, I'm over that now and make a fool of myself daily

Lets just see what difference the shorter days make....imo just reading this thread could have negative effect on members joining.

I also use a lot of forums for info but have never joined or indeed posted.

I remember discussing this before and at the time must have had some time on my hands as I looked at how many registered members had never posted and it was a huge number. The number of members has always been bobbins and people will always come and go. Personally I don't find the ads particularly annoying, can't see much on an iPad. Oh and I never introduced myself but mainly cos I predate that thread

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?
