Current favourites are Munchkin (hilarious and very competitive), Ticket to Ride (nice relaxing game of building trains to cross the USA), Settlers of Catan (simple-ish strategy game of settlement and building), Tsuro: The Game of the Path (beautiful, quick and deceptively simple).

Never heard of any of those! C'mon which one is your favourite ? may have to buy one for Christmas

I like them all, but I think my favourite is probably Munchkin for its wit, lovely drawings and extreme competitiveness (everybody gangs up on whoever is winning). And it's great being able to kill monsters using the "Chainsaw of Bloody Dismemberment" or escape using the "Boots of Running Really Fast".

Like Scarlet, I havnt heard of some of these but might invest in these for Christmas gifts.

Squeee! Another Munchkin fan, here. Hilarious fun. Don't forget, the Level 8 Gazebo. No-one can help you. You must face the Gazebo alone....

We also like old favourites like Scrabble and Monoploy (we played scrabble on our honeymoon - don't laugh!). Trivial Pursuit is a family standard at Christmas. I'm dying to play a really good, long-play game of Risk again, just so I can roll a handful of double sixes and rampage through Kamchatka....

Another more recent one is Carcassonne, a lovely tile-laying strategy game, which you can play as simply or as strategically as you like.

Then of course there's Cards Against Humanity, but you have to be drunk and not in the company of polite people for that one....

Yep, Cards Against Humanity relies on copious amounts of alcohol to work its magic.

Not tried Carcassonne, have to watch out for that.

Have been recommended Cards against Humanity a couple of times, might just have to try it. And Munchkin. I do love board games, or card games. Double patience is very vindictive in our family.

This is true. I had to look up a couple of phrases that turned out to describe some sexual practices that hadn't ever occurred to me. So there's great scope for embarrassment if you play a game within a family setting ...

We bought a triv TV edition and played that twice on our hols last week. I think I won twice...
We also got the countdown board game but haven't played that yet.
