  • Am I really behind?

With the recent rubbish weather, I feel that I am slipping even further behind "schedule".

At present the only thing that I am harvesting is potatoes - nothing else is even near fruiting/ flowering.

In the ground I have onions - the stems of which are about an inch thick. Runner beans are about 2-4ft high, no flowers yet. Sugar snap peas are anywhere from 6 inches high to about 3ft, one flower. Courgettes went in a couple of weeks ago and are starting to take (they were planted in from pots), likewise with the butternut squash. I've also just planted some brussel sprouts, but they are tiny.

In the mini greenhouses I have some dwarf bean seedlings starting to show, some more sugarsnap peas the same. I have a few chilli plants (about a foot high), various tomato plants (plum, cherry and beef) at various stages of early growth (again, no signs of fruit). There are some pepper "sprouts", more onions in vending cups, a couple of cucumber plants with about 5 leaves and that's about it.

Oh, and I planted some carrot seeds in loo-roll centres and they are starting to poke through - my last effort of planting a few hundred seeds resulted in just 4 seedlings. And I planted some mixed lettuce, and they are starting to show.

Hopefully the weather is goingto be a bit better this weekend, so I can make some headway on the allotment and start getting things in the ground, but it is disconcerting.

    Anyone else feeling behind?

Oh, I forgot to mention - my second early spuds are coming up the size of large jacket potatoes. Should I be diggin up my main crops now before they end up the size of footballs?

Things really do catch up HeyWayne. My peas only had one flower on about 3 weeks ago. We've eaten our first portion and my grand daughter ate a handful fresh yesterday - another picking on the way soon. It's a watched pot. Our week away was great - suddenly things were there!

All my stuff is behind too but we do kep getting big growth spurts! All we've eaten so far is salad stuff and some peas but we have some courgettes which will be ready pretty much any minute. Lots of things with flowers and some (as yet) tiny cucumbers but I think we'll be harvesting most stuff later, rather than sooner!

I thought I was really in front, but we got hit by the flooding/weather and I've lost a lot of my crops, I'm going to try and plant some more stuff on Sunday and see if I can get a bit of salad stuff growing in case we get nice weather!

We've had lots of peas and courgettes, but the peas have now rotted in the rain (courgettes going strong). My tomatoes are only just flowering and my peppers are slow!

Wow, you all seem to have harvested a few things at least. I'm still feeling behind...

            I've only harvested 2 things!

I didn't even get any potatoes in this year as my land wasn't fit for it

Don't worry! Weather and time are great equalizers.... I'm hoping (cross fingers) for a few weeks of nice sunny weather, so everything can dry out again and I can sow some more things (my sweetcorn is still in pots, as my veg patch was waterlogged)

I have peas, dwarf french and runner beans with pods (not yet big enough to eat), peppers and toms with flowers, tiny carrots and parsnips and even tinier courgettes, caulis and calabrese with loads of leaves but no heads to speak of, same with pots, tho i have had a harvest of spinach, lettuce and loads of herbs. Everything seems really slow, but then I have nothing to base this against since its my first year.
OWG, sorry you lost some crops, hope you get a good harvest from what you have now.
Flum - glad you had a good holiday, I'm envious!

Envious of a week in the Lake District in the Rain? Nah! The gin and tonics and the good books made it relaxing though. I was as relaxed as a newt some nights!

Absolutely! One of the highlights of my year last year was walking around Grasmere Lake in the pouring rain (October), thoroughly soaked through despite having all the 'proper gear', and loving every second - though I did have several gins myself back at the cottage during the hot bath after the walk A woman after my own heart, can't beat a good book and a good g & t

I can't drink tonight, with this horrid tummy bug, boo. Have one for me.

I dug up another load of taters (Desiree, Arran Pilot, Pentland Javelin) and OH is now butchering (I mean cooking) them for me - he's cut them into one centimetre pieces, I didn't have the heart to tell him to do them whole cos they're NEW potatoes...

My chard is growing well, and finally got a decent handful of radishes, albeit with sluggy bite marks.

I have had loads of potatoes [some mine and some my daughter's as we are sharing the plot], courgettes [hers] lots of peas, spinach, lettuce, spring onions, carrots [the first sowing is all eaten up now, starting on the second], rhubarb, a few raspberries, and the french beans are starting to come now - I am eating them raw from the plant while they are tiny - must remember to leave some!

On the down side, I had to rip out at least half of the tomatoes today as I am sure they had blight - even though I have been spraying. Brown patches on fruits, stems, plant wilted. I'm really sad about them.

I still have lots of questions, but am going to post them separately - thank you to everyone who gives me advice.

Poor HW know how you feel, however I recycled my recycle box and filled it with carrot seeds and they have appeared! What may look ill and weedy to anyone else to me looks wonderful! I feel like a proud parent! Another exercise in recycling took place whilst walking the dogs, I spied some doubleglazed units looking very lonely so I have rehomed them! I now need to know how to turn them into a cold frame!
