  • is it a bug?

Anyone else got/had this tummy bug? My OH had it last weekend and got no sympathy as I thought it was too much grog.
Today I woke to a VERY tender stomach (high up) so palpated it a bit and did some big burps. then the pain and tenderness moved downwards...with horrible results! I feel so sick but can't be sick.

Or have I got food poisoning/bacteria? I used to get similar symptoms when I drank water from my bedroom sink...didn't realise it came from a tank not the mains. Perhaps I shouldn't be refilling my Evian bottles ? Or should I sterilise them instead of just using Fairy?

    Any suggestions gratefully rec'd.

Sorry to hear that you and your OH haven't been feeling well. I dont think it will be your refilling of water bottles - after all, as long as they are clean, (the bottles) we already drink water out of the tap. Sounds like you've both caught a bug from somewhere. Take care both of you. Bernie

It sounds like a bug Two Sheds. These things usually pass over in 24 - 48 hours. I hope so for you.
I don't think refilling your water bottles will do any harm - after all it would be the same water from a cup. Get well soon.

Hope you're feeling better Two_Sheds. Sounds tummy-bug-ish to me... My favourite remedy for dodgy stomach is a packet of ginger biscuits, and plenty of onion & garlic in anything I manage to cook. Soon clears those nasty bacteria out

I think I had that a couple of weeks ago!

only way to tell is to get your poo tested! tummy bugs and food poisning are caused by the same bacteria, (although there are 300 or so different types) the distinction comes from where you picked it up, in your case from your OH (it could have been from a door handle or anything) the bacteria cause symptoms between 3 hours (salmonella, e coli) and 3 days (lysteria).
food poisoning tends to give more severe symptoms as the bacteria will grow to larger proportions on food than on say a hand towel.
your water bottles should be fine if your washing them and the water you drink is clean and not kept in the bottle for days before being drunk, your biggest threat there is strepalococcus areus (proberbly spelt wrong) which would give you a sore throat as well as tummy ache.
hope you feel better soon, avoid food, and drink lots of water, if you have to eat, avoid protien, milk and cheese, bread, anything with yeast in it and any dairy. wash all your veg and fruit really well til you feel better.
            hope that helps.

thanks for the reassurance about my water bottles! I am fanatical about hand-washing (work in a school), but still am bound to catch something. OH cooked me beans and mash and I feel much better. Tummy tenderness has moved right down to the lower half of me now, so I expect its working its way out

I had a similar bug last week, lasted a few days. Reckoned if someone poked me hard I would burst Very uncomfortable but oddly enough, eating something I really fancied (chips, chips and more chips) made me feel much better.

Hope you are over it soon Two_Sheds.

Mash is a favourite of mine when recovering from a bug. It's just so comforting! My son-in-law was told to drink coca-cola - he hates the stuff- after a bug because it contains sugar and trace elements - a bit like the hydrating salts they give for littlies after a gastric episode. Glad you're feeling better - we need you here!

thank you Flummery, and everyone. I hate being ill when I don't know what it is...its useless going GP - you can't make appointments and they never know what's wrong with you either.

You could always buy some Milton liquid or the Boots steriliser tablets and sterilise your water bottles now and again. They use them for baby bottles, so they must be OK.

Or steam sterilise if you have a micowave. Put the water bottles onto a v. large microwave safe lidded container such that they stand up and can drain. Put about 4floz water in the bottom of the container - nuke for about 1-2mins depending on the power of your nuke.

The water should have all boiled into steam, bathing the bottles in said steam.

Be careful taking the container out it will be HOT!
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!
