  • Meatless Mondays, who does it and what is your fave meal?

So I went vegan last year but been tempted to the vegetarian way of life over this past month (mind you, its only been eggs that I've ate) but anyway the boyfriend has now declared that we should have meatless Mondays and Tuesday (Dunno why he is declaring it as its only him and my middle kid who eats it). He has cut back to meat once a day since last year which is very good for him, now he is wanting to eat less as he feels very guilty that animals are killed for him to consume.

Does anyone else have meatless days?
If so what is your fave meal?

Surely if he feels that badly he should give it up completely?,

wish him well but the cow will still die, weather he eats it monday or friday.

I totally agree, but its one step at a time. When someone has ate meat for so long its very hard for people just to give up straight away. Some people just don't have that type of will power. The cow dies whether he eats it or not due to a lot of other industries making products off the life of a cow.

By eating it less often, less cows die......

Re meatless days, we do a few times a week, so times vegan but not always. Made a bean chilli earlier and like using squashes a lot at this time of year. Suppose it depends on what he likes. Personally I think veggie curries are often nicer than meat based ones.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Ok i see where your going with that but i will respectfully disagree with the less cows die thing.
Their butchered then sold, the chinease are consuming massive ammounts all of a sudden, we could swap it for steel lol.
Anyway, the sentiment i agree with, the mechanics not so much.

But yes Evs, i understand the small steps and hope he gets there eventually.

Yeah I think so too, I think with curries you can fill it out lovely with loads of different types of veg, like we put petti pois in at the very last min and that sweetness in the curry is lovely. x

I'm not veggie but have at least 2 or 3 days a week when I don't eat meat...... but I do like cheese and eggs, so it's easy for me to do

No, we would never have a meatless Monday as we usually have a joint of meat at the weekend which is usually finished for Mondays dinner.
We have fish about twice a week instead of meat though.

And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,

I have a week of meatless days - although I do eat fish sometimes.
I can't suggest a favourite meal but there are lots of meals that are easy to tweak to be veggie - like pizzas, pasta, stirfrys and curry. Have these a couple of times a week instead of meat and the transition is easier.

Well I for one don't want to stop. I love fish and have that as often as possible but I do love steak with all the trimmings. Chicken breast stuffed with white pudding or haggis and wrapped in parma ham and loads of veg of course is lovely. We have pasta at least once a week with a variety of sauces and things added and pizza occasionally. Left over boiled spuds get added to eggs and courgette with mozzerella cheese over to make a tasty fritata. I do however respect that others have different eating preferences but I do really enjoy my food - it was leftover lasagne tonight

I like chillies, lentil stews, risottos or cottage pies made with soya mince for meat-free days, which are 5 days/week in my house. I eat meat less often than I did before living with a pescatarian, so as far as I am concerned fewer animals are killed for my consumption. I wouldn't want to give up eating it totally, but not eating it for every meal really makes me think more inventively. And I use bags more herbs and spices.

Same here, I do tons of roast parsnips, swede and squash and they get it all again with the meat cold and some extra veg.
Curry for kids is a no no in my opinion, mine won't touch many spices - most dinners here are based around your typical meat and 2 veg with spuds. Kids generally like very plain flavours and they "grow" into tastes.....a bit like olives
Though I'm not a huge meat fan I would eat fish every day so I could never go vegetarian and I do eat lots of eggs. I don't like dried pasta, in fact the only pasta I eat will be home made, fantastic with a roasted tomato and basil sauce. Splash of red wine vinegar. Topped with spinach and ricotta cheese is delicious. I won't eat rice but if I make pizza it's vegetarian for me, usually spinach based, covered with chicken for the boys we do less carbs than meat, though I do try to "grow" my own.
Foods with lots of beans are tasty but these can be hard to digest for younger tummys, my kale and bean soup for lunch today was delicious!

We have often try to have Meatless Mondays or, if there's roast to use up on Monday, Wegetable Wednesdays.

A simple mushroom strogonoff served with rice is my favorite, my eldest daughter loves my veggie lasagna and for my youngest it has to be good old beans on toast.

I think that meatfree days are an excellent way to change how we feel about dinner. It's hard for my husband not to think of dinner as being meat of some description served with something white and bland (spuds, rice, pasta or bread). For us, meatfree days are about being more imaginitive and not getting stuck in a rut of the same midweek meals.

Also, I do insist that meatfree days are free of fake meat too. I've never understood the need for vegetarian bacon.
