I have today been to the small island of Foula, stuck out about 20 miles from the Shetland mainland in the Atlantic (work but time to view the island on the way).
It is REMOTE (15 minutes on the plane), yet I noticed every house (only 27 people live there) has a large, well tended veg plot and compost heap. Nothing much growing at the moment other than cabbages and neaps, but I gather a full range of veg and salad is grown with varying success. At one house i visited a large container of rocket salad was growing in a warm south facing window. Better than anything I am managing at the moment! I know that they have to be sustainable, but they deserve top marks, as it must take alot of hard work and optimism. Each area is divided up into small working areas and old walls and sheep croos (stone sheep pens) all used to shelter plants from the wind. So much to learn from then I wished I had had more time.
I wont complain ever again about the wind and rain ............
(well I probably will! )
