For some reason I couldn't get to sleep until about 4am this morning. I was woken up by a female blackbird jumping up and down on the fence outside my window and making a noise that was definitely untuneful. I didn't really think much about it being still half asleep. Went downstairs, let the dogs out and put the kettle on. Prince starts barking for England. I don't let my dogs do that as I don't think it's fair on the neighbours (shame they don't feel the same way). So I went outside and found a fledgling blackbird cowering in a corner with Prince barking at it. He wasn't doing it any harm and had only been out for less than a minute. I picked the baby up and put it on a dustbin lid. The mum still kept up her racket and Prince turned his attention to the garden. There was another baby bird. I picked this one up but it had been beheaded, probably by next doors cat. The horrible thing about it was that it was still moving and it's heart was still beating. I put it next to it's sibling. I felt the mum needed to know what had happened to her baby. She and the first fledgling disappeared soon after.
I always liked that cat. I know it's just natures way, but I couldn't help but feel for the mother bird."I prefer rogues to imbeciles as they sometimes take a rest" (Alexander Dumas)

People coming to eat in my home and having to be on a super strict diet that they can't change or relax for just one meal!
So they then proceed to ruin the whole dinner by being picky over everything, looking at my cooking as if it is evil, and then creating a negative atmosphere that doesn't need to be there if they just lightened up when eating at someone else's house. GRRRLOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.
