Is it 320mb of music you have on the hard drive or 3.2gb? 320mb is not a lot of music to move or store and so should not influence your choice really... Based on average 4 to 5 mb per mp3, then that is about 64 songs, so very easily moved back to a laptop or pc if you wanted..
Sorry trip it's 3.2gb of music on the hard drive, and it's not connected to a PC or lap top. Only have tables now.

SP, why not just buy a HI-FI system with a built in USB port for your Ext HD.

I told you I wasn't tech savvy! I didn't know you could do that
The new CD player I'm planning on getting has got USB port.
If I bothered to discuss any of my ideas with the other half, I wouldn't make such an Arse of myself on a public forum !

Believe me SP, you are NOT making an arse of yourself. If I asked all the stupid questions that goes through my head someone on here would have me certified.

I have a great way of collating my CD's its called a ...............................heap. That way I get the pleasure of sorting through them to find the one I want.

The down side is I usually end up listening to one I have come across rather than the one I intended.

My CDs are stored on a string over the top of my cabbages mostly the music I listen to comes from the car radio, or as I call it the wireless I have never been into music, but do have a suitcase full of records in the loft, not because I think they are good more because I hate throwing things out, that said I will post this and move on, for if someone very close reads this, they will be out tomorrow.
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

I have a few really good music stations on the laptop that play in the background and if not I have the radio on via the Pie dish.

And SP don't worry about the daft questions..........they account for nearly 90% of my posts and the gracious Grapes just sigh with sympathy and accept the fact that I'm quite dense most of the time.

I have the same 'heap' system! Fancy our great minds thinking alike hey? I am a very organised person usually, but CDs and books have no order whatsoever in our house!

^^^^^^^^^^^ Same here I know where everything is in my workshop/works van but CD's, books and the like are scattered anywhere. Then to add to the confusion along comes SWMBO to tidy up, she is banned from my workshop though...........well not quite I have just told her there are ....mice in there.

A to Z by band name for me, ignoring 'the's and by first name for singers.

Tripmeup- would be grateful for info on what brand/type NAS you use. I've just bought a new PC and was intending to put all my music on a NAS so as not to fill the hard drive, but a couple of people have mentioned NAS disks corrupting so I'm now at a loss how to proceed.

Also, what's the best way to save (file type?) if I do decide to go NAS?

My wife set up a PC with five 3TB disks in a RAID configuration to hold all our videos and music. It's plugged into our network (when we rewired the house before moving in, we laid network cable to every room, which makes things easy).

I don't necessarily recommend RAID; it may protect against disk failure but we had a scare recently when the PC BIOS became corrupted and all data became unreadable. For a while we thought we'd lost everything since the previous backup about 9 months ago, but Mrs H found a way of recreating the RAID configuration files.

I save all music files as variable bit-rate MP3s, 128-320 kbps using the Lame MP3 encoder. CDs are converted using the free CDex program, I do the vinyl using a piece of software that I bought many years ago called Wave Corrector. There are probably newer and free programs but I've got the hang of this one, it takes out pops and clicks and splits albums into individual tracks.

                              Cheers,

                              Martin
