  • 'Prettiness' advice needed please

Our little cat was poisoned in November by anti freeze since he left us our garden is now a free for all, for neighbouring cats. I like cats by the way. But, without Barney guarding his territory we are now prone to unwelcome deposits does anyone have a way of making barriers around their crops to deter cats but not look too unsightly? I have kales still growing strong but not really wanting to eat it as its been manured by cats! Ugh!
I don't really want netting as it looks messy, and I will have to put some netting on other stuff later in the year so I won't grow so many cabbage white butterfly's! But at this rate, I'm thinking I might just put a cage up over the whole garden!
You may say I'm a dreamer... But I'm not the only one...

Really sorry for your loss, we had three cats poisoned last year also

I have found using lots and i mean lots of black pepper works, worth a go and then you can think of planting in the spring.
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

Go to your garden center and buy lions roar or online, its meant to be brilliant!
I only ever used to get one cat in my garden when we had all the free range rabbits, I think it was a bit puzzled by 27 bundles of fluff just hopping about where they please!

Dispicable to think someone could hurt your pet xx

Ooh I'll have a look for that too thank you we don't know if it was deliberate. People put it in their screen wash on their cars, then use their wipers. Cats like it off their fur, or lap at it in puddles. They like the sweet taste

Our cats got used to the pepper eventually so I started using medium curry powder help along with ground up wasabi peas (which I bought for myself when I had a cold and no taste buds).

It can be quite enjoyable watching the kitty posse judder when they meet wasabi.

I don't know if you'd want to do this around your veg, but for keeping them off my grass and beds I find recycled tea (or beer if that's your preferred beverage) diluted one bladderful to a 2 gallon watering can of water and sprinkled on the ground is very effective at keeping cats off. It does need renewing after rain, but hey, it's free!

Really helps with foxes around the chicken run, but i just get the OH to side step and pee at the same time. Neighbour thought we was crazy one time when he caught us off guard

I use pea sticks and sometimes bits of chicken wire on any bare soil - if they can't find a comfortable space they tend to move on.

As an aside - apparently you should wash your pets paws when they've been outside in the winter as there is antifreeze in the grit used on the roads and cats and dogs lick it off their paws as they like the taste.

You need one of these - they work very well at keeping cats out of the garden.
