  • General seed question...

Why is it that you get 8 seeds in ...lets say a pack of tomato seeds and 40 seeds in the next?

Is there a reason to this?

I paid 2.99 for a pack of seeds to get home and find there was only 8, it said approx 8 on the pack which I didnt see. Yet on another tomato pack there is 40.... they are 2 different varieties from the same brand.

    Thanks guys

Maybe because they were F1. Open pollinated are cheaper to produce so you would expect more.

Thompson & Morgan don't mention Cherry Cascade being an F1 so I assume you can save seeds although why you only get 8 seeds only they will know..................

very frustrating i have done it on many occasion and not looked properly on the back to find i only have 6 seeds, i think they should atleast have 10, but then again i think they should have a 100
I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

Blimey, I have only ever looked at how many seeds are in the pack when I've bought special varieties. I've just looked at the packets that came with the latest GYO mag, enough seeds for 230 tomato plants and 650 basil plants. Considering how often I've managed to kill my basil over the last 3 years that might be a good thing - but tomatoes, I usually have about 20 plants in 2 or 3 varieties.

I've found this with a few seed packets I've ordered online - when I open them there's only a few seeds - but then you get some packets with hundreds in! I assumed it was to do with cost, but then maybe its to do with supply and demand, how many seeds they actually have and how long the seed is likely to last too?

                          Who knows?!

I opened some from wilko the other day and there was 5 in the pack, I looked at the approx quantity and there should of been 100. I put the pack in such a safe place so I coulld complain later and its so safe I cant find it haha.

Ive never had this happen before so quite suprised this year. I will be feeling the packs nect time I buy some haha
