  • Lent.

As tomorrow is the start of Lent. Just wondering is anybody giving anything up for the seven weeks?

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

Yep, meat & bread over here. Plus going to get up earlier for a bit of quiet thinking each morning.

      Never done it before..
      Why do you do it?

Could do with laying off cakes like
If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it.

I don't always give anything up. This year it's meat to make me think more about what I buy and from where, bread because I eat way too much of it and it would be good for me to have a break, and the contemplation because that's probably also good for me.

Alcohol, it's always alcohol for me

I know someone who tries to do a good deed every day throughout Lent, giving flowers, get the shopping for someone who can't get out, gardening for a friend etc. Than sounds like a nice idea, I might try that too.

The months of January, February and March are usually pretty bleak although March does give the promise of the coming spring. Many people use January to detox and generally have a fairly restricted dietary intake. They get less than 2 weeks respite and then give up things for lent?

This makes the beginning of the year even bleaker. Why would anyone want to make this part of the year even more depressing than it already is? Fortunately I'm not religious so I don't go along with this.

It doesn't just have to be about giving things up Janie, as I said, I have a friend who spends the whole of lent thinking about others and doing good deeds. For me, doing that sort of thing would make me feel better about myself.

                    That's a lovely idea, scarey.
Its a shame there aren't more people who think of others, instead of themselves, all the time

I don't bother giving anything up for lent. Coz if I know I have to give it up, I will want it more.

So if I don't think about it I know I don't want it.

Tell me about it Carrie, I have given up sweets, biscuits and crisps. Alcohol was the new year one and that's still ok.
Note I haven't included bread in my list. Got to have something left

I suppose it comes from when I was a child when we always gave up sweets for Lent. We would put them in a tin and then torment ourselves looking in at them and wondering would the seven weeks ever end.
Now that I am older and wiser, I take the time to just do something that makes a difference to me.

I am giving up bread, cakes and biscuits. Just kicking out the junk really. Also going to cut back on the meat again this year.
Have already cut my cups of tea down today. Only had 4 so far.
Use to cut my sweets and crisps out when I a little.
