I know, I know but I'm gonna try it anyway........you know me too well.....................ok, I have a 4' x 2' x 12" deep cold frame that's doing nowt & I'm unlikely to use. I also have a mountain of chippings.........can you see where this is going?..................if I pack the cold frame with chippings & really compress it down to around 3" from the top, do you think it will act as a heated propagator?..............I'll try it anyway & see if I can get it to heat up............wish me luck. I'm gonna have to stop creating work for misen...........

Personally I would put a layer of something a little greener in the middle like grass cuttings (not that there is much of that available at the moment). I like the plan. Do it.

Its a mixture of wood chips & conifer leaves so I'm hoping it's a good mix. Have just insulated the sides & filled it with 3 barrow loads. It's currently ready 11c in the middle so will see how it goes over the next few days.

When I had my plot, I had a dalek full of chippings which was hot to touch. This being a lot shallower I would expect to get warm but not hot. Time will tell.

Todays Update!

Just been out to check the warm bin, well I can't call it hot just yet...........
The outside Temp is 0c
The air Temp inside the frame is 10c
The core Temp of the chippings is 17c
So although it's not cooking yet, it's going in the right direction.

Today's Figures!

Present Outside Temp - 7c (went down to 1c overnight)
Present Bed air temp - 20c (went down to 14c overnight)
Present Core temp - 23c

So, it looks like it's going in the right direction.............
