  • How secure is your password

Just found this site where you can check how secure a password is.

    https://howsecureismypassword.net

I haven't entered any actual passwords, but a similar combination of letters/numbers/symbols just to see the results.
They range from "it would take a desktop PC about 1 million years to crack your password", up to one which came out as "71 quadrillion years".

    Well, that's a relief then.

How many years is a quadrillion?

The UK used to be long scale, and I was very put out to find we had officially become short scale. I think it happened in the seventies. I still thought a billion was a million million, and it had actually been reduced to a thousand million. I felt cheated out of quite a few millions.

As far as I understand the Americans operate short scale their billion is the equivalent of one thousand x million. Whereas in a long scale country their billion is one million x million.

Short scale is when a billion is a thousand million.
Long scale is when a billion is a million million.

USA has always used the short scale, GB used the long scale until an official change to short scale in 1974.

A quadrillion, short scale, is 10 to the power 15, or 1,000,000,000,000,000, or a thousand trillion, or a billlion billion, or one thousand million million.

So if I understand the scale situation it is a case of " not in my life time".

We went to a quiz last night. The first round was 20 questions with about six bonus questions. The next round was 30 pictures of dogs. There were another 6 rounds to go. I lost the will to live and this thread has done the same for me again.

                            Anybody got an asparin?

On a similar note though...............up until recently the speed of light in a vacuum was classed as a constant (an unchangeable fact) e.g 2.99 x 10 to the 6 ms2 = 2999999 metres per second squared but...............

Now they have moved the goal posts and said that they (the shadowy scientists at Cern) have said that there is light that moves faster.................so not so set is it.

I could have told them that if they had given me a tenner because my energy saver light bulbs take forever to get bright so they must generate the slower light.
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

Is it only me that has the thought that you enter your password, the site places a bit of malware on your PC and then it has your password and the possible accounts you may use the password on?

Would at least save them several years trying to break it.
