    Oh gosh....
Depends on how desperate you are to leave...how well you could support yourself if you couldn't find a new career...how long the training for a new career would be...bound to be other things to consider too.
Too young perhaps to retire early I imagine?

What new career have you in mind?
Could you train up between now and the end of the year?

I've made them before, they are easy to make but, for me, they never quite taste the same. My other problem is stopping them sticking to the ring that they are cooked in.

        • Morning All I've been uprooting forgetmenots - think that's what they're called. I've forgotten already!
Wendy, no job is worth doing if it makes you ill. Obviously I don't know anything about your circumstances, but you can't buy good health. You know what you want to do - so do it!
As for the travellers, on their way to Mull via countless pub stops, enjoy yourselves.

          • Hope your granddaughter enjoys her confirmation, Bramble. And have a lovely knees up too later on

Wendy that is quite a quandry. My husband was offered redundancy last year and in the end decided to take it and go for early retirement. It wasn't an easy decision because of finances but in the end they made it so much easier because of the rather thoughtless way in which he was treated after 35 years of loyal service. There was no way he could have stomached staying in a job where he did not feel valued or even nicely treated by the management. We are enjoying our time together even though we have a lot less to live on. The bills all get paid, just don't have loads left for any extras. Luckily we enjoy a lot of free activities like walking and nature watching etc.

I think the main thing is to think about whether you can afford to resign now rather than waiting any longer. And will you have enough to get you by until you get another job etc. It is quite a big decision but I'm sure you will decide on the one that works best for you and your circumstances.

            • Morning! I survived Glasgow! (Just in case anyone cares )

Made the appointment with 5 minutes to spare (wasn't prepared for how slow moving the traffic would be early a.m.) but got lost on way home. No idea how. I managed to find a motorway services place with food though so all was fine.

I do worry about getting lost with no food available, as long as there's food I don't care where I'm lost.

Dull dreary day here at the moment so looks like it will be house cleaning day today.

@ Wendy, I'm assuming you can financially afford to make this choice otherwise there wouldn't be a choice to make? If the decision isn't to be based on financial matters then it's down to how you feel about going into work there. If you can tolerate it, then the usual career advice is that it's always easier to get another job if you are already presently working, you're already a proven asset so to speak. In that case stay on and spend the time researching what else is out there.

But if you can't tolerate it and it's making you miserable then you need to decide just how miserable that actually is. It's always difficult making life choices like this, sometimes you just need a leap of faith. Hope you feel settled about it one way or another soon.

              • Wendy...is it a good moment to reassess your quality and expectations of life?

Maybe worth considering downsizing/ relocating at the same time as a career change?
Sometimes these moments are a good time to step back and take a look at yourself, family ,lifestyle and reconsider the route you are going along.
                Just a thought

I was 49 when we started to decide to change our lifestyles/ expectations considerably.
And we really don't regret it.

                • I took early retirement/redundancy at 48, my husband got out the following year. Our income dropped to less than 50% but we never regretted it for one minute. Morbid, I know, but if he hadn't finished work when he did, he would have worked until his death, and never had 10 years of freedom to do whatever he wanted to do.
                  Only you can decide, Wendy.

                  • If something makes you unhappy (whether work or other), you need to do something about it...Your health and well being should trump all really..As VC says, life can be too short sometimes.

                    • Thanks for all the helpful ideas and suggestions. I've pretty much decided I am going to leave, it's just when. We can't afford for me not to work and we can't move anywhere smaller than we are now. Come the end of the year we would be in a better financial position which is why I would be better waiting. Trouble is I'm not sure I can face waiting that long! I have applied for another job, the closing date is today so I am compulsive email checking. If I got it then decision made. I shall go and pull some bindweed and cogitate further.

                      • GG, glad you 'survived' your Glasgow appointment .... Hope all is well with you

WendyC, not much I can add to what the girls have already wisely said, really. Only you know what is best for you - and at the end of the day, only work to live - money really doesn't necessarily mean a better way of life ... I know it helps (a lot!!) but if it's to the detriment of your wellbeing: forget it!!!

                        Bramble, enjoy this special day

Have a lovely afternoon one and all

                        • Wendy, one thing's for sure: once you've made the decision, whichever it is, it'll be a weight off your mind.

Like Nicos and VC, we made a huge life-changing decision, leaving well-paid jobs, big house, two cars, pension plans and all that. But when you're time-rich, not having all those things seems to matter less. It's been a struggle at times, but not a bad life by any means.

And even if you decide to stay till the end of the year, at least you'll know there's an end date in sight that's not that far away.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Nicos, I've posted a crumpet recipe here:

                          • Good afternoon Folks, its been a wet day here today and now it is getting colder, Wendy I took redundancy at 56 and have no regrets, but each person has to make their own decision, and whatever you do have no regrets.gg you should try going through Perth, stressful, wow but I suppose it depends on what you are used to, and for those thinking about going to Mull good luck. Well going for my tea now might go out to the greenhouse latter, but at the moment torrential rain here, so I suppose I don't need to water the garden.
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

It's cooler here too, might light the woodburner tonight.
I can hear the boots starting marching outside (slug army) now the light rain has stopped.
Had a bit of down sorta day, too much on my mind I think and the weathers carp. Feel like running away to a new life
