Morning all VERY wet day, had a massive thunderstorm yesterday and a ton of rain. To add to this we had a burst water pipe down our road so the whole road was flooded this morning. Now been fixed. Garden is boggy. No watering required for a while except in PT so that to be thankful for.



So excited as well to see my very first runner beans growing. Now I know what to look for, I can spot where the flowers are dying off and the little bean is emerging. If you've never seen these things grow then you've got absolutely no clue what to look out for.

That's what none of the gardening books explain or show in detail - I'd love a book that has detailed images of each vegetable step by step as it grows so I know what to expect. I've never seen a book like that. Most of them have a brief paragraph about each veg and that's it. Beginners want detail and lots of pictures.

Now I am waiting to see when I can pick my first ones - same with peas. I can just see a little yellow squash forming as well so all getting to the really good bit after lots of hard work

You've done really well there Marie, I've only got one or two little flowers on my runners - yet ...
It's so exciting though! I agree with what you said re not knowing various stages of growth with each type of veggie... An excellent idea for a book !!

I have broad beans growing in a potato bag (first time for me) and was shocked at how quickly the bean pods formed straight after the flower dropped off - I thought they were dying ..!!
Now - when do I pick 'em as they're all different sizes - some look long and chunky whilst others are just a bit bigger than a matchstick ???

Picking broad beans the VC way!
Have a feel of the pod.
Can you feel the beans?

If NO and the pod is about the size of your little finger, you can cook the pod whole, like French beans - or leave them to grow bigger..

If YES - do they feel big enough to eat. As the pod gets bigger, it also fills up with "fur" to cushion the beans - so it can be deceptive.

If Very Big, YES, and the pods are going brown, you're a bit late. The beans will be big but they may have a tough "skin" that you will need to pop the bean out of (bad grammar!!).

Best way to find out is pick one and see

Council started wheelie bin collections here two weeks ago.
There are many black bags littering the whole road, I contacted the council via book face and they sent me a fly tipping form. Ever tried to report a whole road? Never going to happen. At least it passed half an hour on this rainy day
Did have a re tie up of the tomatoes and a bit of armpitting, which was much needed
Football is on this afternoon - WHATS THAT ALL ABOUT.
Being as I KNOW there will be an outbreak of Tourette's this afternoon, followed by a probable bout of depression, I'm off to work for a few hours ��

I echo Nannysally on what's that all about LOL. I can't get my head around football. All I know is that nine times out of ten, other half ends up disappointed when England don't perform very well. I am locking myself away with music on so I can't hear all the shouting and OOOOHHHHS and AHHHHS and what the BLEEP are they doing ha ha!

Good job on the broad beans Susie. I might have a go at those next year

They was even saying they will get a few people together and help me out on the plot to get rid of the weeds. So can get it done much quicker. They really are a nice lot. :/

MY word,dropped of to sleep and woke up shivering,not good in June is it,heating is NOW on,must say well done your plants peeps,i got envy creeping in as all i got so far are a few small broadies they seem extremly slow at growing,with what i have been reading of others varouse plants,it looks like peeps WILL be lucky to get something for the virtual show,so good luck all.

Afternoon all..

Went for a 6k run during my lunch hour to free up some calorie space for all that beer and wine on my holidays Best go again tomorrow

Cannot wait for tomorrow evening as that will be the daughter finished her exams and me finished work...A nice relaxing Friday evening, do some organizing on Saturday so as to leave it manageable for my Mam & Dad to do the watering whilst I am away and then off on hols early Sunday morning for 10 days

Besides, it'll make him a martyr and we all know men like to be martyrs don't we?

The first part of above shows why men do things that make them martyrs, we know that due to the fact there is no reasoning with women life is quieter and easier if we just say "yes dear"

My gardens flooded Arggggh
Shed will be floating away soon lol
Hubby is outside baling out
This was just one big thunderstorm to do this and I blame it on the fact that there is hardly any grass or dirt in the surrounding area.
When I was trying to report the bags of rubbish with no luck this morning, I decided to report the odd few Beds in sheds instead.
Apparently someone will contact me within a week. Yeah right.
