Just use a thin lair with soil or compost underneath to provide feed as there is no feed in the coire itself. :-)
Thank you. That's really helpful. I'm just getting annoyed at wasting seeds now when only a few come up after sowing loads. I don't like that John Innes seed soil that so many people seem to rave on about - I'm tempted to chuck the rest of the packet away it's been that bad. Maybe I got a duff packet but I'm not buying it again that's for sure.

Just come back from sports day. Very hot, tired and sweaty (yuck) after sitting in the baking hot sun to watch all the events. Daughter who is not at all sporty came 4th in the sack race so she was pleased to get a sticker for that. She also has PE, swimming and the last school play to perform in tonight so I think she will be absolutely shattered.

I am close to nodding off now but have a coffee to try and perk me up again. Nice to see the sun out. Have a good rest of day all
LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.

        • Good afternoon Folks, its a nice sunny day today, have been kept busy with grandsons, and Deano I might moan a bit about them but they are all a blessing, I wouldn't change it one bit(mind you I have changed the nappies which I don't want again) I Wish you and your family lots of joy. Marie, lettuce like to be kept cool, so try sowing your seeds somewhere cool and see how they do, and Nicos is the crossed legs not a bit late I always thought that was a form of prevention,,,. I wish you all a pleasant afternoon I am off to make a higher pair of stilts for one of the grandsons. Good day

Keep the coire about 1" thick moist - in the greenhouse last year it was ok for about 5 days before it needed watering but this year in the polytunnel because of extreme heat watered it every other day. Outside for carrots I just kept an eye on it and as there was sufficient rain only had to water it now and again - today after being on holiday for a week it looked a bit dry but suspect roots were already trough to the soil after sowing 3-4 weeks ago :-)

                        • Lovely day at the allotment today - did a lot of weeding - moved bottom wooden straps on fence down an inch or so in order that strimmer wire could not be snarled in the fence wire under any gap between the wood and the ground - if that makes sense :-)

Lifted some more beetroot - friends suggesting that I should lift them all as they are getting too big and may get hard/tough in the middle.

Back up tonight around 7 to close up the polytunnel and those of my friends. :-)
