We had to nip to the shops yesterday and blow me, didn't a large mirebelle and apricot tart accidentally fall into the shopping trolley?

Sorry to hear about your friend NS. I've been there, all you can do is be there and support them when they need it. Your friend has an advantage because she's got you .
Weather isn't great again so just for a change I'm going to be in the kitchen putting things in jars in various combinations but mostly containing plums .
            Have a good day everyone

            • Morning girlies, thanks for your kind words.
Dull start today, but should pick up later.
Off to work today, our sad news will marr the morning, but life goes on doesn't it.
Going to see the GG later on, complete with cooked chicken!
She face timed us last night and couldn't wait to tell us about her Polish adventures.
It had a lot to do with food, which pleased her.
Funny how you miss the little ones. Please remind me I said that when we do Orlando with her next month lol
I did manage a little potter in the garden yesterday, secateurs in hand
Have a lovely day you lot

              • Morning all. It is that time of year when the house reeks vinegar and onions. Yes it's ..... chutney season! I am being much more restrained this year and making only a few family favourites and hardly any jam. Picked some greengages yesterday and jammin' this morning. Made piccalilli and runner bean chutney yesterday. Already done a little bit of plum jam. I will do a mountain ( alright a big hill) of pickled onions and am waiting anxiously for the damsons to be right for damson vodka. And I think that may be it. The climate is not conducive to sun-dried tomatoes - Stoke on Trent just ain't sunny enough. However, I may cheat and put them in a very slow oven.

Meeting the 'girls' from work for coffee and catch-up later. I know, I know, but if they are younger than me they are girls. And since everyone is younger than me .....

Have a good day everyone. I think it is going to be the last good one, weatherwise for a little while.

                • Morning all! I think I'm having one of those go slow weeks...I'm just very tired. I went to bed early last night and I could still do with a nights sleep

I did some dried toms inthe oven a few weeks aho Susie ...the trouble with an Aga I'd you can't smell any food cooking until you open the door! 48hours later I remember that they were in the "warming" oven charcoal Tommy crisps

                    • Morning all, sorry to hear your news NS.

It's lovely this morning but I believe that's to end come lunch time...just as I arrive at the hairdresser.
Daughter and hubby arrive this afternoon for a one night hotel stop before they attend a wedding, looking forward to seeing them although I'm hoping they forgive the state of the house...it's hardly been touched this past two weeks because I've been laid up! Changed their bed yesterday so at least that's clean!
Anyhoo, hope you are all well and have a great day. Must look out Dorothy R's chutney recipe and get started on that soon...it was delicious and so easy to make. Have a good one!

                      • Had a bit of a rough time recently with juvenile delinquents causing trouble down our street night after night. It's got so bad that all the residents have been given ASBO forms to fill in and had the police knocking on all our doors today gathering info. I'd like to go out there and give them a right rollicking but when there are 20 or so of them and I'm barely 5'2 probably not the best idea.

Anyway, to de-stress I've been cooking all day. Made two quiches and had a go at making some plum jam. Never made jam before so hope that comes out OK. Having a sit down now and chilling with the cat.

Gorgeous weather again. Can't complain for September. Need to look up some runner bean recipes now as got lots of those again.
LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.

Nearly 4 hours today after dropping No.1 grandson off at school - completed 1 large bed and turned the top weeds on 2 small ones so that the kids can get some practice at weeding. Had 1 cup of coffee and declined another - aren't teachers nice people looking after an old gardening guy like me

2 large buckets of stones left for Janitor to dispose of same - cannot believe they grew anything on the stony soil in these beds. Picked up 50x50Litre Coire Blocks, (pre-ordered), and delivered them to the school shed.
