Anyone here drink red wine? You don't have to have grown the grapes yourself :)
Right, off-topic and showing-off alert: my current favourite wine is a biodynamic merlot grown not a mile from me. Price: 10 euros for 5 litres. Same price for the last three years but this year's is especially good.
I know: it's just not fair. But at least you can buy decent tea bags and cheddar in the UK!
I've been drinking Shy Pig from Morries - £3+ . Not sure how being given a bottle of Shy Pig would be interpreted!
Better than a bottle of 'old tart' or 'old git'
Edit: Red wines are hard to judge. I used to like classic french but now I only tend to drink aussie wines. You could go for something entirely different and get a fruit wine http://www.broadland-wineries.com/ou...try-wines.aspx
Oh Morries used to do a delicious South African Red called Featherstone...not sure if they still do it though, worth a look if you are in, think it's round £7/8 per bottle.
Merlot, Shiraz or a Fleurie is nice (but not the one Budgens/Londis stock). I was nanny to the children of a wine connoisseur many moons ago. He told me that the cost of the wine wasn't important, what matters is whether you like it.

I love my Red Wine Gardening_gal and i recommend 'Hardy's Crest Cabarnet Sauvignon Sharaz Merlot'...Its always on offer at your Tesco stores at around £5 bottle.
Do you know whether they like light wines or more deeply flavoured ones? It can also depend a bit how much you want to spend. Personally I like the deep fruity ones. I love rioja, montepulciano, pinot noir, amarone, barolo and brunello - in escalating price order! We maybe have 1 bottle of brunello per year...The Oyster Bay label is a good & reliable one, and so is Campo Vieja, in my opinion.
If you have a wine merchants near you they should be able to help too if they're worth their salt. Shouldn't matter whether you're buying one bottle or 12.
You shouldn't go far far wrong with a mid priced bottle of rioja.
